Hi all I am very new to the game only been playing about 12 months and still very much a novice :(. I brought a cheap set of clubs Dunlop Max IIs to start with as didn't know if i would like the game. I am very much hooked on golf now and was looking at upgrading to a set of callaways maybe. Is it to soon for me to be playing with a better quality club or will it help me improve my game??

Hi,
If u are upgrading i would go second hand something like the Muzino MX 19 or the Callaway X20 you could get either for a really good price and are both great clubs for a high handicapper.

Cheers for the reply. It was the X20's i have been looking at as i have seen a few sets at some very cheap prices on Ebay, I recently got a callaway Big bertha ERC II driver brand new fo £30 also of ebay

2nd hand is the way to go to start off with IMO.

Just be careful with ebay though, you may end up with something like a Big Bercer!!! Or a Tyler Mode!!!

If you aren't sure they are genuine then get someone that knows what they are looking at to have a butchers.

Yes i have heard of alot of fake sets being sold on Ebay, cheers for pointing it out.
Also the clubs i have at the moment have graphite shaft but i have been told that being a 6ft3" 15 1/2 stone bloke with a fairly athletic build i would be better of with steel shafts, how much truth is there in this??

Height & size has little to do with what you should be using. I'm sure you're not, but a 6'3 guy could swing it like a pansy and not need anything with more flex than a stick of liqourice, but Ian Woosnam was officially 3'4 and needed x100 girders!!!

If you are just starting out then I'd recommend getting something with a reg steel shaft. It's not going to be miles off and if it is too whippy it will start you off swinging nice and easily.

BTW @ 6'3" and 15stone, Iwould definately not be calling your swing a pansy's!!! :o :D

Stick with regular shafts to begin with until you have developed a dent and repeating swing. Have a look at the online stores or specialist 2nd hand like Golfbidder (bit pricey mind). I agree that you need to be careful with e-bay because of fakes some of which are actually pretty hard to distinguish from the real thing. Maybe see if your local pro or range has any second hand sets in

Just be careful if you join a club and enter any competitions as the ERC II driver is a nonconforming club and is illegal for use in tournaments.... :(

I have been offered a set of callaway X18s 3 - SW , 9 clubs steel regular shafts in great condition for £150, I know i was after a set of X-20s but these seem a bit of a bargain. Question 1 are they a bargain and question 2 is there much difference between the X-18s and X-20s for a novice like myself??

Golf bidder has lots for sale dearest £270+ cheapest £213
So the offer you have had looks good make sure you check them out before you buy and if you can try them.

specs on the two have them as almost identical in loft/lie/length etc (maybe 1/2 - 1 deg, +/- 1/4 inch), both mid kick, same swing weight. (makes you wonder why they changed them!)

never used them so don't know if they play any different.

I think it will be some time before i join a club and start ehtering tournement as i still havn't broke the 100 mark yet been close thou with a 101. But thanks for the Info ;)

don't let that stop you. get in there, get a handicap and play. best way to put lessons to good use.

I thought the two were pretty close. I went from the X14's to the X20 and although they weren't for me (too much height) they were a solid performer and would suit a newbie perfectly. I think regular would be fine to start with and you can worry about shaft flex and other technical matters once you get into it and find a swing that works regularly for you. I did look at the X18's as they were still being sold when I was looking at the newer model and they would do the same job as the X20.

As for joining a club and playing comps, don't sweat about not playing under 100 yet. Get into a club, get to meet lots of new partners and get your three handicap cards in. Allthat will happen is you'll start off on 28. A bit of practice and maybe some lessons and that will soon come down and you may even pick up some silverware in the process. There has never been a better time to join a club as most are desperate to get members in

Join a club and get entering those comps, I've been playing for a year and only played in the club comps and it proved very fruitfull with my handicap now standig at 22, Don't be put off.
