Well it's been a few weeks since I went to the Grove for the NGT workshop. I played well in the afternoon and since then haven't been worse than buffer zone and came first in the Saturday roll up. In truth it had been easy as I'd been hitting the ball nicely.

Today was a different kettle of fish. I swing it terribly with collapsing left knee, super fast tempo and an inability to hit it properly virtually from start to finish. Lost ball in hazard off the tee at two, tee shot right on four into thick rough, only moving it forward by seventy yards. Topped tee shot into hazard on the par 3 sixth for no points. Over the back of the short eighth. And out in......19 points. Granted I chipped and putted like a god (12 putts going out and a sand save and four up and downs to save par)

Much the same on the back nine. 14 putts, another sand save and another two up and downs for par. So what? Well apart from all my years in the short game wilderness being finally over and I have a short game again and those hours of practice recently paying off (and I've gone to a traditional and not linear method), it is the mental attitude.

In the pre NGT I'd have been thinking after my poor tee shots, mis-hit approaches etc that the technique was shot and start looking for a fix. Now I am thinking clearly, not panicking. I keep to my RAF routine, find a mental position A and look for the next career shot. I am in a calm place and now I know I can get it round without hitting it well at all. It means I don't have to think about my swing, can trust myself and just play. I had an empty mind and ended up relishing the challenge of yet another up and down.

There will be those that will continue to knock NGT, no doubt without looking at the e-book let alone adopting a single one of the seven principles but you know what... sod 'em. Nothing worse than buffer and now a cut (depending on where CSS goes and it was looking at least 71 - usually CSS 70) when playing like a dog. It really has transformed my thinking and approach and there is nothing of the old Homer left. Granted there will be days when I swing like today and don't get it up and down and have a huge score. I accept that. However, I won't panic on the course and take the bad one on the chin, not rush to check the faulty technique and be able to reflect calmly and move forward.

If you haven't tried NGT or are still unconvinced by the ramblings of those of us who went on the course, I strongly suggest for the sake of the price of a sleeve of mid price balls, you purchase New Golf Thinking and check it out. I am probably the most complicated and over thinker on the forum. I think my history and short game shenanigans back that up. I'm a different golfer now. NGT. Its the future

Must admit I've been looking at this on amazon and wondering should I shouldn't I. As you've said homer it's really only the price of balls so may jump in, what have I got to lose?

Well have read the book and still the same thinking as before - its just the same thing many people have done previously with fancy words attached to them

Well done on your round today - but as they say ( with a card in the hand ) one swallow and all that.

For people that do "overthink" stuff then finding a way to clear the mind of clutter is a good thing - for me the NGT adds more clutter.

Different ways for different people - believe the best thing would have been to wait a couple of months before big statements of "its works" "different golfer etc" etc because we all know this game can come back and bite us all.

Good luck i hope it "has worked FOR YOU"

what is the traditional chipping method? hands ahead, ball back?

Club head more neutral and using the bounce with hand on or marginally in front of the ball. Hands forward (old fashioned traditional method) leads to digging for me. Glad to ditch the linear. It works but it made me feel sub-conscious as the set up is a little strange looking.

using the bounce is more new skool chipping btw ! ;) glad its working. my mate ha a short game lesson recently and the pro had him using the bounce and playing little floaters. opened his eyes in how to utilise the bounce.

Thinking of getting this.

How does this work exactly? I filled out the handicap form and my average handicap is 20 so I take it I need a lot of work lol.

How are the other people who are using it fairing?

Thought wise, I'm playing much better, the shorties has helped me the most this far, in that previously I'd use my Bushnell to get the exact yardage to the flag, then pick a club for that yardage and give he swing an almighty thwack with the result I'd be spraying the ball all over. Now though with NGT I'm selecting a club more and swinging easy, the result is more accuracy and I would say 95% of the time I'm past the flag.

That said there are certain circumstances that NGT cannot help with; Two weeks ago I played, my Puma's had split, both shoes in exactly the same place, so I bought a pair of Nike Luna II shoes, first time on was for that round. Rookie mistake I know, but by the 10th my feet were blistered to hell, I carried on, but by the 14th I could barely walk, so I picked up and hobbled round the remainder marking the card for a lad that had joined us. It took 4 days for my feet to heal. T

Then yesterday, we shouldn't have gone out, it had been raining heavily and the state of the 1st tee box should've sounded the warning bells. We teed off though none the less, it faired up for one hole, but then the clouds dropped and visibility started to close in, but a few good shots and holes made up for the weather. Just when we thought the worst of it had blown past, the wind picked up and the rain started again, this time coming in sideways and it just wasn't fun any more. No matter how hard I put a positive spin on things I couldn't stop thinking about a hot bath, a nice cuppa and putting my feet up. Needless to say we picked up and took the 0.1 increase. If only NGT could influence the weather :)

NGT is helping me, I'm happier on the course now and do not let slow play, other people get to me. Rather than wonder why they people in front are so slow, I think it's because they need to be and I just carry on focusing on the shot I want to play, have a few practice swings and picture previous good shots I've hit with the club in hand.

I found the best way was to read it through once, decide which parts of your game needs the most work and take that section as a starting point. It way too much to try and do all in one hit.

It certainly looks like it's paying off for you. It seems that it's taken the focus off of what's going wrong and trying to fix it, to ok, that's gone I need to focus on this next shot, where do I need to be? The results are speaking for themselves and keep doing what your doing as it's certainly working and It works for you so who cares about other players views on it.

The form..... Link please?

I'm genuinely interested as I find I'm a tinkerer mid round if things aren't quote right, yesterday as a prime example the driver stroking was good but out of no where I developed a weak fade, granted four holes later it was gone, but I'm wondering if NGT may be onto something,

How weird....my thinking hc is exactly my hc....77/7=11

Now there's some food for thought. I'm generalising this over the past few months from memory, but thinking of doing a fresh one during an evening game this week
