Hi,

Having restarted playing golf after 5-6 years out of golf I have had a look at my equipment. I have bought a set of Mizuno MP64s (X100 shafts- 1/2 inch longer) and a Ping G25 16 degree (stiff shaft).

I am currently using an old driver- a Taylor Made R9 8.5 degree. My question is this, I hit the ball very high, to the point that I only get a few yards run after my carry. I also push my driver when all my other clubs are hit with a nice draw. This has led to me swinging for a big draw with my driver to keep it straight. I have also changed down from an x stiff shaft to a stiff.

I have a big, fast swing (around 100 mph) and can reach 300+ yards easily but create a lot of spin. If I am looking at new drivers, what sort of recommendation would anyone have?

Thanks

If you are hitting 300+ easily (with no run), with a push, my advice would be to aim further left and stick with that driver

Welcome to the forum.
Good news your already hitting forum distances so your going to fit in nicely.
I think with less spin you could also get up into the top 5%.
To be honest stick with what you have as long as its spinning on the fairway.

100mph swing with a carry of 300 yards - umm that's impressive

If you can send the ball out there 300 yards with no roll-out, I suggest you guard that driver with your life, and play to your push.

Do you measure your drives regularly? Some people on this forum have been known to exaggerate their driving distance a tad is all...

Welcome, you'll fit right at home here! :p There's a few things that don't stack up - bolded above.

What are you trying to achieve? Lower spin? Better dispersion? Fade, draw? High launch, low launch? Too many variables to 'recommend' a driver.

Is this a thread to wind up all of us short hitters? I don't even hit it 300yds in my dreams. The obvious answer is to ask a pro in a shop but the other numerous answers of "guard this club with your life" sound about right to me.

300 yards. Bro.

Welcome along, a serious answer would be - look for a low spinning driver, one that is renowned for adding distance including run out - say a Taylormade SLDR as a starter.
The other usual answer is go somewhere that you can try loads of different clubs and have a proper fitting.

Also, of course we'll need to know how much you have to spend, what colour castle tee you are using and whether you use overlap, interlock or Vardon, at what altitude you play, the prevailing winds and grass type?

Thanks- basically I am looking to hit the ball straighter with a lot less height. It honestly comes down like a wedge at times.

Try out a few low spin drivers, as suggested the SLDR is one of these and also has a sliding weight that will help counter your push. Other low spin drivers include PING's Anser and the new Titleist 915 drivers (depending on budget).

If you're striking it well, which you must be to reach 300+, then it shouldn't be too difficult to flatten out your angle of attack a little to find a more penetrating launch angle that will give you more carry and run.

Driver technology hasn't changed much since R9 days for balls hit out of the 'centre'.

SLDR is a significantly lower spinning head, but also less forgiving than the likes of the R9 (the Limited Edition w Matrix shaft is a great Driver still!). Other low spinning heads are Adams 9015D (I have 1) and 9064LS (I have 2).

I'd be inclined to look at shafts rather than heads. Diamana Whiteboard/Ahina/D+ will bring both spin and launch down, as will Matrix 6/7M3 Black Tie or Prolaunch Red.

High Launch/Low Spin is the holy grail btw. TM's 17/1700 is actually pretty much optimum, but certainly looks high!

A session on a Launch Monitor would almost certainly be of benefit.

Oh and 300yds carry is a ridiculous distance for 100mph swing speed. If that's happening in normal conditions, who cares about how high it goes - keep that combo!

Really? With a thread showing the pro yardages with modern equipment and you've and old model, going too high and still get it out to their sort of distance. Is that really the average or the once in a blue moon spank? If you want a lower spinning version get out and try a few and see if you can get on a launch monitor and get your figures so you know how much spin etc you really get
