Not exactly exciting but apparently running teenage girls around for football is a more productive use of the weekend.

Trip to east lothian.

Gullane 1 - Great course, my favourite we played. Challenging but scoreable, good views, good condition.
Gullane 2 - Weather horrific, possibly the worst i've ever played in - cold, wet and windy. A couple of brutish holes.
North Berwick - There's no doubting this is a good course, but its rated that highly I felt a bit underwhelmed. In my opinion its on a level with Cruden Bay rather than the true greats.
Kilspindie - Nice 'filler' course. Short so loads of birdie / eagle opportunities, but not easy.

I feel ever so slightly embarrassed, I think that I have only played one new course this year. Thirsk and Northallerton. I would play it again, an excellent variety of holes.
I have read through all your posts........Dunbar is one of my favourites, but the weather has to be on your side. We played Craigielaw for the first time in decent weather, and really enjoyed it.
I agree with the comments on North Berwick, very overrated.
I will obviously have to play Cleve Hill this year. My Mother was from that neck of the woods, but it's a fair drive from Bradford. I could do with a recommendation of a few other courses to make it a bit of a Cotswold Tour.

Plenty nearby. Just for starters, Burford, Tadmarton Heath, Painswick (if you want very quirky) Cotswold Hills, Lilleybook.

I'm sure a few on here would tag along

For me, North Berwick is the most overrated course around.
Gullane 2 is every bit as good as 1.
Kilspindie is a wonderful course, such a pleasure to play.

Does 1 justify the big cost difference from the other two?

Not in my opinion, 2 is just as good as 1 for me (and maybe even better). 3 is less good than either 1 or 2, it's a good bit shorter but fun nonetheless less. 3 often has the best greens of all the courses. 2 & 3 make for a great 36 hole day in the summer time.

Brancepeth Castle - extremely foggy when played here, but, thoroughly enjoyed, some cracking holes / ariet and a great / unique clubhouse to boot
Dunstanburgh Castle - stunning scenery and great condition for the time of year. Extremely difficult in the wind, but, enjoyable nonetheless and very welcoming staff in the clubhouse.

I mark all the courses I play on using Google Earth. There are 121 on the list, though not completely sure when I played them all for the first time. The only ones I definitely know I played for the first time this year were:

Southwell: 9 holes are in the middle of a race track
Thorne: Annual Membership is about £40, then green fees for each round

So, neither course is one I'd recommend as ones you must play. But, they were OK for knocking a ball around for 4 hours and having a it of fun.

Also played:

Richmond
Catterick
Bedale

These were all played during the Dales Golf Festival. I quite enjoyed these courses.

Did not have Google Earth available when I started......
have been lucky enough to play over 200 courses in the UK Ireland France and Spain,
plus a lot more here in OZ.
