New clubs

A couple of weeks ago I had my lofts and lies checked at the local range. After four years use, the lofts were miles out,up to 3* on some clubs. When the lies were checked, everything was coming out more towards the toe rather than the centre. This probably explained my inconsistency and lack of distance and the pro said my clubs were too short.

yeasterday I went for a proper fitting at the range and tried the Nike Vapor Speed, too chunky, and the RSI 1. My current clubs are regular graphite shafts, standard lie and length so I was a bit apprehensive when handed a stiff steel shaft! However, after trying a number of shafts and lies it was obvious that the stiff shaft, 1" longer and 1* upright was the best option.

25 yards further with a RSI 7 iron than my John Letters club, can't wait to get them in a couple of weeks and try them on the course

Couple of points.......

TM lofts are always very strong plus the fact they have given you 1" longer means you might find that 7 iron is the equivalent of a 6 or possibly even a 5 iron in your old set.

Also, I'm assuming that you Letters clubs are forged? Cast clubs are pretty unlikely to move much unless they have been abused, 3* out is a lot!

Good luck with the new bats though, heard good reports about the RSi range :thup:

I feel like I should get my lie and loft checked as I've had my forged irons for a while now. Where is best to get this done? Or is it likely that the pro at my local club will run a service to do this?

I love them. So much confidence with them as well.
Don't get me wrong....I can still fat one 10 yards given the opportunity, but when I do connect with one they fly.
Surprised Richart a couple of times with my club selection at Blackmoor last Wednesday!
Really nice high ball flight, and loads of spin.
I wouldn't say I'm 25 yards longer with my 7 iron now (that's crazy long) but certainly hitting one club less (at least) than what I was hitting with my old Cobra S3's.
And on checking them they are exactly the same length and lofts, so it's not because they are "jacked up".
I'm surprised the OP is going from regular graphite to stiff steel though. That's one helluva change in shaft.

The main 2 reasons for the shaft change are, I now swing consistently, 4 years ago I was a relative beginner with a very varied swing, and secondly, this was a proper fitting with different shafts tried as opposed to a generic " try this club" at a larger golf superstore.

i think the 25 yards is down to
a- extra TM loft
b- longer shaft
c- more importantly, hitting the ball out the middle of the club instead of the toe!

I agree with the point about hitting it out the middle making perhaps the biggest difference but not sure I've ever seen a 25 yard difference any time I've changed club and been fitted. Not to say it hasn't happened in your case but that's a massive increase. Do you think you'll see that through the bag, especially the long irons and at the bottom with the 9 and PW?

The difference will probably be more noticeable with the long irons. I only got a 5 -SW as the lofts of the 5 was about 4* stronger than my current 5 iron so more like a 4 iron. The shorter irons are much the same as my current ones, so won't be as drastic a change. Will still need to sort out yardage sand then maybe swap some wedges.
