Just received my new CF16 and am so happy

Had my first hit with them today and of course the timing is off etc and you start wondering 'uh oh'

My wife is astounded that when you get properly fitted it is essentially one iron only and the assumption is the rest of the set will be perfect - as a tennis player she picks a racket and serves, volleys, drives etc with the same tool and cant get her head around the game of golf

So of course I booked a nice long gapping session today on GC2 and it was a mini disaster really - 7 iron was glorious on every single strike but I had hit a few hundred balls with that set up prior to purchase already

But the 5,6,8,9 irons all felt like new slippers .. nicer than what you had last xmas but just right now doesn't feel quite right ..... you need to 'bed them in'

How long in all your experiences does it take to get used to them?

Speaking personally, no time at all. My view is that if you need to "get used" to clubs you've bought the wrong ones. I got fitted for my irons a year gone October & played fine with them from day 1. The only thing I needed to pay attention to was the distance I hit them because they were a bit longer than the old ones.

Agree with above, as soon as I play an iron set I know if they work for me or not. Have persevered in the past with irons I did not like initially and none have ever won me round.

If they're very different in terms of weight, shaft or whatever, then it may take a round or two to be comfortable.
It certainly shouldn't take much longer than that.

Depends how much you gsve been playing when you get/got the clubs. I got my Apex cf16's around Sept time last year so the season was over halfway through and I was playing regularly. I found her clubs very good straight from the off, but you may remember me saying to you in another thread that I had borrowed a 7iron for a week or so from the fitting cart to see if the clubs suited me before I committed to buying them.

If you've not played much throughout the winter, and you're not the sort who can pick up clubs after a break and look as if the last time you played was yesterday (not many are!), then you might find it'll take a bit of time for you to get used to your new set.

You've bought good clubs so have a bit of patience and make sure your swinging well and give it some time to get used to them.

A good fitter should have you hit every club after they have been put together and adjusted accordingly.

Depends how good a fitting you had? That said, I bought a set off the shelf last weekend and shot 32pts with 6x3 putts. The irons were fine.

I sometimes wonder if we overcomplicate things. If you have a decent repeatable swing with a relatively neutral plane why couldn't you hit anything off the shelf?

You really shouldn't have to get used to new irons, as long as you have a repeatable swing you should hit them fine. Yardage may be slightly different if the lofts are different but other than that irons are irons, I play off 2 and could basically use any iron with an s flex steel shaft, it's how you present the club to the ball that matters. As the old saying goes it's the Indian not the arrow, it is nice to have new irons and a different 'feel' but if you have been fitted properly you should hit them pretty solid

I agree Brian. I had custom fit JPX850'S but never really scored as well with them as they went during the fitting, i did an AG trade in for a set of TM RSI 1 irons and took them straight to the course and shot 38 points. Since then i reckon ive parred more holes per round than ive ever averaged before - 4 of my playing mates have bought these irons off the shelf since trying mine.

I'll let you know when my tax rebate comes through and I toddle off to AG to take in my RSi TP's for something new and shiny 😎🏌️

I spent ages trying and then choosing the new irons and had three seperate fitting sessions with different people at other locations so I know the clubs are the right fit

Having hit the 7 iron so many times I guess i am used to it but having the 5 iron in my hand this morning was odd as it was so different to holding the M2 - but that was to be expected

Hit a 100 balls at World of Golf tonight and things were much better - still occasionally hitting behind the ball but I guess I need to adjust fully to the new weight of the head etc

Don't regret it for a second and never get new shoes without a packet of compede!!!

an oxymoron surely? If you went to the effort of geting fit then surely they are the clubs for you...no settling in needed

I am the moron

Remember that you only ever hit the one club when your being custom fit - in this instance the 7 iron in the case of the Apex cf16

So then having a slimmer less chunky 5 iron in your hands for the first time is odd

You know your show size but you know you have to get used to them - I was just asking if I was alone in finding the same with the clubs

I am an 18 handicapper not single figure so I can't just pick up and play

Really shouldn't matter what handicap you hold, custom fitting can only do so much. The rest of your problems are technical especially if you're not hitting it cleanly

Tried the one sized Cobra's last week. Very strange, especially the longer PW and 9 irons and I didn't have confidence in them. The gapping on the 5, 7 and 9 I hit seemed reasonable, and the distances comparable with my I25's.

Any set I've bought or been fitted for has always gone through the bag and I usually take them to the range for a session or two before I play but never have any issues from there and have adjusted pretty easily
