Are there any gas fitters on here?

I think this is the start of mega problems with my boiler. Red hot radiators on call but only Luke warm or cold water from the hot tap. We have had the 3 way diverted changed recently which seemed to work for a week but the problem has returned. I think this may have been down to having the boiler turned off all day.

I think I'm just going to bite the bullet and get some quotes for a new boiler given mine looks old and October is approaching. I've already booked British gas to come out and will get an independent fitter but do like the idea of payment terms through BG. Are there any boilers I should stay clear of, including British gas's own brand?

Im not a gas fitter, but am a builder,BG are a fortune for replacement boilers, not just the boiler but the add ons that go with them.
BG recomend worcester bosch which are arguably as good as it gets.
Have you not tried BG homecare plan? provided boiler parts are still available its a very good service, £13/ month i think.

im a gas safe engineer and would probably fit a worcester boiler, and would recommend that once fitted take out worcesters cover plan (after the five year warranty expires), my mother uses them and its an excellent service. defo get a few quotes and make sure that the system is cleaned and flushed in accordance with BS7593:2006, very very very important also fit an inline magnet cleaner thingy bob, imo.

Thanks for the responses. I've found a few advice sites and have been referred to boilerguide which is a service that organises 3 companies to come out and give 3 quotes. I've also booked BG and will compare all 4.

The problem with my current boiler is that spares are getting sparce so a home plan wouldn't be worth it so would be forced to be an engineer to source equivalent parts otherwise the automatic response would be to condem the old'un

I'm looking forward to the free quotes, and probably even more BG's quote followed by my response. I've been told they don't like the idea that your getting a few quotes as at that point they know they've lost the deal

you haven't stated if it a combi boiler or conventional boiler,if the later and the rads are getting hot doesnt sound like a boiler problem, check on the cylinder to see if you have a clamp on thermostat if so turn this to 60 degrees and see if your water gets hotter.

We replaced our condemned boiler for a Bosch Worscester a few years ago. Got a local (Corgi approved) guy to do it and it cost about £2k. BG quoted £3600 for the same job, same boiler....

Im thinking about getting a new boiler

One that will let me play golf whenever I like and will also let me get Sky Sports

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick again...

Im a qualified gas fitter and we fit valiant boilers or worcester if you use oil.

Worcesters are good but personally i think they are a pain in the ass to fit and a pain to replace parts on, never had problems with valiants and their customer service is excellent.

Personally i would stay well away from british gas, they are con artists and charge a stupid amount for the work they do. Any questions just PM me and ill be happy to answer.

Your basically paying for their advertising, the thing that makes me laugh is most the people that do their work are not british gas employees! Personally i'd stay well clear of them, read the small print always especially with them!

Thanks for the advice guys. Im gonna get a few quotes and first up is BG tomorrow morning. I'm going to make it clear to all that money is tight and tht I'm getting a few quotes.

I've heard from everyone that BG are rip off merchants and I have no intention of using them now instead of a local qualified tradesman. I'm also contemplating buying a branded boiler and having it fitted by a qualified installer. It would save them adding their margin onto the boiler and would leave the labour rate only

Depends what work is involved, if you have a system boiler in(cylinder, header tanks etc) and you put a combi in its a lot more work and higher costs, if its combi for combi its really easy depending if the old combi is condensing or not.

Kev most guys get the boilers much cheaper than random joe buying it so not sure if it would be cheaper, just make sure they flush the system properly and i would 100% recommend getting them to install a magnaclean on the system also :)

Was that a like for like swap or completely replumbed boiler? I'm wondering if the pipe work is standard across different ranges of combis therefor work would be minimal?

Our old one is "heat only" so it supplies a tank. We wanted to go for a combi, but our plumber said it would involve too much other work, as (presumably) our showers etc. run off the tank.

So it'll be similar and I expect it's a straightforward job. Even though I'm happy with him, and the price, I know how much the boiler is. I suspect 50% of the price is for labour....

My current boiler is a c&m brittony combi 80 but not sure if its condensing or not.

Should be a straightforward job don't think that boilers condensing so only thing they will have to do is run condense pipe on new boiler to a suitable drainage pipe. Id say somewhere in the 1800-2000 range.

With the price of copper and materials id be surprised if labour was that much
