New 2019 rules

Thanks, at least it has to be a local rule and not a rule. I can see all kinds of problems trying to agree with those your playing with.

complete opposite for me, if youre going to introduce it, do so fully as a rule, rather than people not knowing whether its a rule in play each time they go somewhere different

Fair point which is why IMHO there are so many " myths" around.

In fairness the concept of such LR situation is relatively recent and hasn't really had much chance to create myths... we have DMDs worded to enable the Tour not to accept them, the current situation with 18-1 (which will get resolved) and now this sensible solution to a situation club and social golfers have been requesting for a long time but makes little sense to the elite game.

Can't see any club not implementing it; no downside and loads of upsides. I will happily give any opponent in match play 3 off the tee on the edge of the fairway; and in handicap competitions any advantage will quickly be reflected in a players handicap ie won't exist for practical purposes.

On the other hand you could have a lot more players walking back to the tee when they fail to find their ball after 'only' 3 minutes....

So the lost ball drop isn't an option if you play a provisional, that will give you something to think about, great ruling.

The change that will probably affect me the most is the double-hit no longer carrying a penalty.

With my yippy chipping there were plenty of times last year I took penalties for this, twice in a round sometimes.....
And I had one on Sunday just gone. :o

I can see why they've done it - but not sure l actually like it - even as a higher handicapper who is likely to gain benefit from it.

Scenario: 350 yard par 4. I hit a tee shot 220 yards but it disappears jn the cabbage ( and is therefore about 130 yards short of the green). I go & start looking for it but don't find it. My options are to play traditional stroke and distance - and try to play a decent shot of about same length as the original, but which lands on fairway. So hopefully I'd be attempting my 4th shot from the fairway at about 130 yards out. Or, l simply take the new option, 2 shot penalty, and guarantee my 4th shot is from the edge of the fairway, 130 yds out.

I know which I'd take every time - l mean, why would l go back and risk putting another ball into the cabbage again? Seems a bit against the spirit of the game to me?

I am opposed to any rule that does not require the player to re-negotiate the difficulty he faced with the lost shot. The addition of penalty strokes cannot approximate the effect those difficulties pose for the payer and he should be forced to play the shot again...or quit.

You're not going to go back though are you, that's the whole point I guess, get things moving along, either way, you're likely to rack up double at best and net double is the highest that will be recorded for handicapping purposes.

As far as I see it, the new Lost ball/OOB rule is there to speed play up. You can quickly work out where you need to drop.
Saves time over 3 off the tee, then hitting the 2nd (3 off tee) in the same rough place and spending a combined 6 minutes searching for said balls.

So they change the rule, everyone has the same advantage - no problem as I see it and it speeds up play !

I think that's a really good idea, it could save the walk of shame.

That phrase has always intrigued me. Shame for what? Your ball is lost....where is the shame in that? As long as players view rules penalties as punishment instead of competition advantage equalizers there will be people who are shamed by a penalty stroke. Sad

Wouldn't you find greater satisfaction in beating an opponent with your skills than by a stroke you got because he took advantage of your mistake?

It is essentially removing the provisional ball from play, why would you play a provisional now, no reason whatsoever.

There is a very good reason why its only a local rule. If it was a rule of golf it would have to be implemented in the proffesional as well as the amature game. This rule will never be used on the tour.

By giving clubs discretion with a local rule they can use it on one hole, a couple of holes, the whole course..etc, or not at all.

Regarding provisional balls, if a provisional is hit and the original is found OOB on a hole where this rule is is in play, then the provisional becomes the ball in play and you can no longer take a drop.

And in the process making it even more confusing for the golfer, especially a visitor? Cant wait to play an away match and ask on every tee if there is a local rule about OOB?

I assume pro golf cant make a tournament rule to not allow it if its a rule of golf?

It's just a phrase, (maybe I should have used inverted commas), that attracts a lot of banter if me or any of my mates have to do it.
Not sure I really understand the last sentence.
