Near Impossible Bunker Shot - What's my Options ?

Ok, so twire has it right, and the ball must remain in the bunker.

However, his question of why the pro's play out sideways or backwards remains.

Since most of them are as good out of sand as off turf, why not take a drop in the bunker, instead of risking a sideways splash out into the clag, where the lie may be unplayable?

Not really practical, but what do the rules say about prior to playing your approach shot, walking up to a bunker and raking it to remove any defects, just in case you think you're going to land in the bunker. Are you allowed to do that?

Well from this thread I get the impression it's just one bunker, and that it happens a lot. I didn't say it was practical...I just wondered what the ruling would be.

I could certainly see situations where you have a tricky chip over a bunker onto the green and making sure the bunker was 'in fair condition' could be beneficial and not slow play too much.

Or another angle. Could you go up and 'test' the sand before you get in there ? I know you can't once your in, but what if you're not ?
