AstroTurf in a bunker

we have the rubber crumb bunkers at our course (clay based) they are good as long as the sand is racked regularly otherwise all of the sand gets taken out of the heavily used areas and your club bounces off the rubber crumb enabling a 100 yard bunker shot out of a greenside bunker , trust me when that happens during a medal you will have a sense of humor failure

We have felt linings in the bunkers.
They are horrendous to play out of .
There needs to be enough depth of sand to stop the bounce hitting the lining.
With the price of sand a lot of clubs are not keeping enough sand in them.

Try playing a bunker shot off a driving range mat that’s what happens.!

This isn’t the first bunker where East Ren have used old Astro turf to line the bunkers, they done a few of them this way 2 or 3 years back. I suppose the greenkeepers can only use the materials & budget they have available to them to do a job. East Ren doing things on the cheap is nothing new & charging probably the highest annual subscriptions in the local area. They have lost quite a few members in recent years due to this. The head man there definitely knows his stuff but he can only be as good as the budget allows him to be, like in any profession I suppose.

I remember you having a go at East Ren in the past. If you actually knew anything about the club you'd know what you're saying is incorrect. There is a lot of investment going into the club, course, clubhouse. And this year we gained more members than we lost.

If you say so. I probably have forgotten more about east ren than you know.

Play nice.
East Ren is a cracking track…just don’t think they should’ve gone down the tree-planting route that was started when I was a member back in late-70s, early-80s. I wasn’t that engaged with other members at the time but think that there was quite a bit of member opposition to it…nonetheless it went ahead (as such things often do despite member reservations

I would agree with you, but that was before my time. I believe there was a financial inducement to do so. I also believe a number of courses in the area did the same. They've been there for about 50 years now and are getting to the end of their life. We've chopped down a lot over the last few years, and it's greatly improved the course as it receives more sun and wind and so dries out a lot quicker.

My course had some felt lined bunkers for a few years, it was not a success. The lining actually started to lift in some places and got damaged.

We have just spent a load of money rebuilding and reshaping every bunker using the black rubber crumb. They call it “blinder”. It’s much better for drainage, gone are the days of bunkers becoming flooded or washed out after heavy rain. But sand depth is important otherwise the ball or club bounce off the rubber base.

Yes ours have started to pop out of the surface as the stakes used to hold them down give way.

One lad actually got his club stuck in one and damaged his shoulder.
I have never met a golfer who thinks there good.
There horrible.

Tain had the practice bunkers replaced with astro about 10 years ago. its still going strong. Nairn did a couple of the practice ground bunker before i left and they were a vast improvement. they used to get destroyed. replacing turf bunker riveting every two years was expensive. i think they were also going to try a few of the waste area edges too, though im not sure if they did or not
