National Anthem

Each to their own, but I don't see it getting much better after the first verse.
Pretty much irrelevant to modern life.

God Save the Queen
God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen;
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us,
God save the Queen.
Oh Lord our God arise,
Scatter our enemies,
And make them fall
Confound their politics
Frustrate their knavish tricks,
On Thee our hopes we fix
Oh save us all
Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign;
May she defend our laws
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen
Not in this land alone,
But be God's mercies known,
From shore to shore!
Lord, make the nations see,
That men should brothers be,
And form one family,
The wide world over.
From every latent foe,
From the assassins blow,
God save the Queen!
O'er her Thine arm extend,
For Britain's sake defend,
Our mother, princess and friend,
God save the Queen
Lord, grant that Marshall Wade
May, by Thy mighty aid,
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen.

Well with modern life being actually quite ? at the moment and not all it's cracked up to be there's no harm with something old and traditional!!

If we go along that route places and sections of society could have their own 'anthems'.

All those fiddling the welfare state for example can have "I sponge off thee my country"!

All the anti immigration brigade can have "Get out thee of my country"!

Endless possibilities!! ??

Not sure we should sing this bit

‘ Lord, grant that Marshall Wade
May, by Thy mighty aid,
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush’

Doon won’t like it ??

Doon won't like anything that isn't Scottish no matter what's chosen ?

Billy Connolly and the archers theme is a personal favourite of mine . Mind you most of his stuff is .but the archers tune with a few decent lyrics could be the answer .

The American anthem is middle ground to me. Not as dreary as GSTQ but not exactly JP Sousa. Stars and Stripes Forever is pretty rousing, maybe even the US Marine hymn. I'm just waiting for Trump to insist we change the lyrics so that he can fit in there somewhere......being the greatest ever at everything of course:poop::poop:

Following on from the VE Day thread, it got me thinking how much I dislike our current National Anthem and think we should have "Land of Hope and Glory" instead.
What do you think we should have, or do you think we should keep as is?

If they really want to have a 'National' anthem, then they should commission someone to provide a new piece of music, or at least new lyrics to an existing piece of music.

Something anthemic that people will sing at sport or appropriate gatherings, but in keeping with a modern, diverse country.

Not something that refers to Royalty or Religion, which are at best divisive subjects and at worst have been actively violent and murderous, especially in the case of Britain.

Personally think it is very difficult for a country like the UK to have a genuine National anthem given it has 4 distinct nations in it.

It's also completely daft for England to use a UK National anthem. They should have their own anthem and a UK wide one should be separate.

Just use the tune for Greensleeves - replace the word 'Greensleeves' with 'England' and get someone to write appropriate words for the rest of each verse. Sorted...;)

Am I allowed to say that, in my opinion, Flower of Scotland is even more of a dirge that GSTQ? Even the lyrics are no better...

Crash helmet securely in place ;)
The crowd at Murrayfield really get into it though, unlike the English.

I suppose it’s all they have to look forward to before a match however.

Thing is - the actual Scottish National Anthem is considered to be Scots Wha Hae - though back in the day we always rather struggled to sing it.. .attempts were made from time to time to have us singing Scotland the Brave - but that was never much of a success either as we ended up just bouncing up and down or doing a bit of birlin' and skirlin' with our mates.

The issue with a number of the alternatives is that the lyrics are dated or not designed to be used as an anthem. We have some wonderfully rousing tunes, LoHG, Jerusalem but not necessarily the right words for the times.

We either need to marry new lyrics to one of these tunes or start the whole process from scratch.

I agree that our current anthem is uninspiring and we could do with a new and rousing anthem.

I would vote for this:
But then, I wouldn't get a vote.

Saying that, I don't think anthems should change, even if they are quite bad.
And what the Americans are doing to theirs when everyone singing trying to put their own touch on it? Just NO.

I agree. There are at least 3 John Phillip Sousa songs I'd rather have....Semper Fi, Stars and Stripes Forever and the Marine Anthem. The words to the American anthem are ok....but too many people are yodeling their heads off. Even the air force anthem would be great...although you'd have to change the words.....because, you know, ....all the bombs and dying and stuff.
