As some of you may remember I posted a set of Mizuno MX19's for sale not so long ago. I had the clubs a year and loved them in the shop but it took me a bit longer to get used to them on the course. Fact is they never really bedded in well. So decision was made to flog them and try another set of 'easy hit' Irons.

I returned to Nevada Bobs in Belfast and bought a set of Taylor made Burner Irons - which may I add are fantastic.

MX19's went on ebay and sold no problem for a bargin £188. Sale was completed Irons packaged and posted. A week later the buyer emailed me to ask for £100 back as they Irons where not as described - Naturally I thought he was a chancer and told him they where a standard set of MX19's. On his reply he told me that he had taken them to his pro and the grips where Golf Pride Mid size (not std), the Shafts where +1" and the shafts where stiff.
Naturally I thought it was a bit strange but I know the grips where defiantly mid size so I gave a full refund and paid for the shipping.

When the Irons returned I asked my pro to check them and sure enough he was right they where different grips, +1" and stiff- NEVADA BOBS BELFAST had sold me a set of irons that where totally useless to me a beginner. They where someone’s custom set and they had palmed them off to me possibly by mistake possibly hoping I would not notice.

I took the Irons back to Nevada bobs the manager simply told me I had 3 options they would sell the Irons for me but would only get about £130 for them, or I could have up to £150 off another set of Irons depending on the value of my new purchase the third option was to get out and don’t bother him again. Great customer service.

I felt I had no option but to leave the Irons in the shop - a few weeks later they phoned and asked me if I would accept £130 for them, I simply said NO. Luckily enough I sold them myself to a mates mate, who they suit well - I got £150 for them but I am still p155ed off with Nevada bobs as they simply did not really care, and I am out £45 for postage. I have spent well over £1k there in 12 months and I will NEVER spend another penny as long as I play the game.

Nevada are only good for lake balls (dozen prov1's for 17.00), I wouldnt give them the money for anything else, I know a fella stevey who works in AG, hes a decent bloke who wont try to bluff you.

Everything is coming from the pro shop now - I did not have one before. But certainly will not darken Nevadas door again.

That's really s£$%.

As a beginner you are reliant on being given good advice, and not to be seen as an easy target by the retailer to flog you any old stuff that they want to get rid of.

Have you taken your story to the local press? I think NBs are franchises and if the franchisee is pulling these kinda stunts then the franchise owner can withdraw the license. Something to bear in mind.

are you saying you have been playing with an inch longer clubs than you should have been, or do you need longer ones anyway? If you require standard length and have been playing with an inch longer the difference would be huge, I would have been surprised if you could hit a good shot with them. I have 1/4 inch longer shafts and they suit me fine, when I was having them fitted the pro said that he had never given anyone 1 inch longer clubs because they are just too big for most people, even if they are seriously tall. I am surprised you didn't feel the difference straight away in terms of length between them and a previous set you had used, an inch really is a noticeable difference. Nevada bobs are bang out of order though, you go there to buy clubs that will help your game not make it worse.

Sorry to hear about this mate.

Are NB anything to do with Online Golf as they stock exactly the same equipment at the same price.

I would lodge a complaint to the CEO of NB as this is totally out of order, playing with longer than standard clubs could have caused injury to yourself. I would battle this one mate, they aint got a leg to stand on.

seconded.

This is very poor and something NB HQ should be interested in. Here in The Smoke they broadly have a reputation for being up there with AG for 'walk in' sales.

Hope you get it sorted out.

During my busy working day addiction to buying golf gear online I have noticed that NB has the same stock levels and gear as Onlinegolf!! I have used Onlinegolf before and rated them greatly, but if this coinsidence is correct then I shall have to rethink my addiction buying from now on.

Yea I am 5'11 or there abouts so I need standard clubs. As for not really noticing the differance - they where my first set of clubs - what was I to compare them to?? As stated I got on OK with the clubs but they just never really bedded in hence the reason for selling.

When I took the clubs back NB told me that they only have my word that I did not order the clubs to that spec.

I could see this being a decent topic for GM to do a spread on in the mag!

'Are you getting what you pay for?'

'Can you trust the big names?'

Some kind of advice to beginners!

I don’t think it will happen - I am not saying they will be bias but look at the amount of advertising they give mags, however, if they want to I would be willing to give them a few answers.

This probably means some 6 ft 8" gorilla has been playing for the last year or so with some childrens sticks, because the enormously oversize custom fit clubs he ordered were given to someone else.

Ken, as long as you are sorted now, all you can do is put it behind you, and take your future business else where.

hahahahaha lol, you don't know how funny I just found this when reading it. It is probably true though, they got two sets of clubs the wrong way round. You have cheered me up no end- thanks!

My instinct would be to a) get in touch with citizens advice as they have breached Sale of Goods Act by mis-representing the product sold to you, b) get in touch with NB head office and tell them the story is ready to go to press in local/national press and GM, Todays Golfer etc (a bit of truth enhancement should at least get their attention)

I think there is also merit in someone writing a piece for GM on the pitfalls facing newbie golfers as there seems to be regular threads on here all telling similar tales. I think if the store names were kept out of it then I can see no potential damage to GM advertising revenue while still getting the message across

I am not so sure the threat of making the press is the best way to go but I do agree withtelling NB's head office because i.i.r.c. Navada Bobs are franchises and anyone bringing their name and reputation down will face the possibility of loosing their right to trade inder ther NB banner. If that doesn't work then I would look into legal advice.

I wish I had had something like that before I gave JJB £200 :(

I have thought of a similar item before based on the custom fitting offered by the various retailers. Having been wrongly fitted before by Direct Golf and an online retailer I was well hacked off and thought it would be interesting to compare the services offered by the various options (high street, pro, club fitter etc).

As to the complaint, persevere with it. I am generally pretty good at getting complaints sorted and it takes a bit of time but most companies rely on complainers giving up before they get anywhere.

I didnt really mean a name and shame as I agree on the advertising front but just in general, some tips and advice for beginners, explaining the custom fit theory and the pro's cons from buying off the shelf etc.

Spoff been had and i'm pretty sure one of our other uses is about to go and buy some X20's with out even hitting them down the range!

To beginners, clubs are clubs. But to us lot, would you really let someone sell you club's with true tempers in if you couldn't swing em for sweets?
