My Swing Speed Journey

Bit or a weird speed session this morning, have not been doing much speed training lately think that was 2nd session in a few weeks but have noticed on course my balls definitely going further.
So all 3 speed sticks were roughly 5mph down but my starting driver was 108mph it usually starts 100/102 max and I finished today at a 111/114/114/114 I did a 4th finish just to be sure. So previous personal best with driver was 110mph that’s quite a jump but oddly I was slower with the speed sticks. Anyone else had this happen ?
Not me. But I would love that!

Taking a couple of weeks off due to picking up a minor knock skiing. However played a few holes tonight and our 1st has a bunker at 230 ish that I'm usualy in, behind or next too. Leaving some 185 to the green over some trees. Tee shot today , off the whites , 25 yds past ! No warm up , just clubs out the car and off I went .
Flew a couple of greens too 🤣
Really looking forward to the season.
Hopefully more to come as I move on to level 3

Looked on my Garmin and it was 254 yds.

Sorry to ask a repeat question but it’s a bit buried in the thread now. What training systems are you guys actually using?
Superspeed, gym and some "hit as hard as possible on the range with the driver".

A bit stuck on my speed at the moment, I am a few mph behind my best performance 3 month ago. However, I am still having a lot of fun and Driver has become my favourite club. Last tournament I measured around 114 mph and I was very confortable on the tee shots even though the course was tight. (I played a fade shot and my swing has become way shorter than before for some reason, I only discovered it after looking it on video at the end of the tournament)

The end result was +7. Considering that It was my first time playing the course and I lost -5 shots on putting (measured with stroked gained) and some more shots in short game (not measured) I finished very happy overall!:)

Yes I'll add I also do some hulk smash at the range, it's good fun.
No gym but am just keeping fit with running and cycling.
Got a knockout on Wednesday, nice weather , off the the back tees. Looking forward to it.

Direct speed training I use superspeed sticks, and absolutely smashing balls with my driver, with no regard for anything else.

This is supplemented with gym work, primarily just because I like being strong and moving well. However I think the strength gains add to the speed as muscles generate peak power at about 30-40% of max force, so if you are stronger and have a total force capacity, the higher the force you can make moving fast.
Specific pieces that I believe relate to speed - plyometric jumps, lateral bounds, medicine ball throws and slams, ballistic push ups, and the classic weightlifting lifts - generally power variants from the hang because it's easier and the more technical full variations add little value for power development.

Hit the milestone of a 120mph driver swing today. I'd had the 121 which I thought was a false reading a while back, but today had a couple of 119s and a 120 so I think it's legit. Training has definitely helped, but I think the warm weather and sunshine did its bit too.

Thats some movement, I think in june you were around 115 mph so its a serious increase in speed! How does it translate when hitting a ball? Are you using the PRGR or other radar?

Congrats man!!

Thanks, it feels good to have hit that speed.

Yes it's on a PRGR, so I'm sure there is some margin of error, but the main thing is the relative increase.

I was on 115 earlier this year, I wasn't expecting quite such a big jump so soon. The speed training definitely is a major part, but I think the gym work plays a pretty significant supporting role too. Given I'm already pretty strong, I know the only gaps can be in technique and speed training. Whereas some people might have to gain the underlying strength too. Interestingly, through the winter my lifts had plateaued a bit, then from the beginning of March it felt like everything felt a bit lighter and moved a bit faster again, which coincides with making this big speed jump.

I'm genuinely surprised I got to 120 so quickly, I guess the next goal is to push towards 125, I reckon I'm a while out from that though. With a ball it's closer to the 116-117 range, and although I won't miss it, the ball could go anywhere. It does mean I can comfortably play to around 110mph though, which I am happy with for now. I'm also excited to see how it impacts my scores this year, the goal is to make as much of a dent as I can into single figures.

What ballspeed are you seeing?

My nephew took his new driver to the range last night. He was getting an easy 160 ballspeed. Pushed it to 166.

The best I could muster was 150 ballspeed, 2 ibuprofen and a blast of my massage gun. 😄

Swinging in a way I would take to the course I can get a ball speed around 158-160. Going all out it could be anywhere between 130-168.

I think the being in relatively decent condition and strength is what keeps me from feeling sore and broken.

For sure, I don't think distance holds me back, it's just another tool to make things easier. I only started playing around 3 years ago, so still learning, happy with progress so far, but I also want to keep pushing.

The way I improved was to look at my game and ask myself what is my biggest weakness. Work at that then ask the question again and again.

If should really be glaring obvious to yourself where you are losing shots in a round.

3 years is no time in this game. Keep at it 💪

I try to combine that approach with also doing what is fun. I'm sure I could get shoot level par with a 90mph swing speed, but giving it a good whack is fun.

I have a long time to play the game and get better, but perhaps less long until speed starts dropping off, may as well get to the highest peak I can before that time.
