My Swing Speed Journey

It is really weird though. In my real swing, especially last night in the studio, I really feel like I am putting every ounce of energy into it, and only getting up to 104 mph at most. But then when I do the practice swing, even when I was nice and relaxed about it, my lowest was still up at 112mph
They are speeds I could only dream of with any swing.

Both Rory and Paddy talk in their videos about speed training sessions involving hitting balls at max speed while not caring where they go; breaking that psychological barrier where you slow down for better control.

I’ve heard the suggestion that you should address the ball then swing hard with your eyes shut. Basically it’s training your brain that you will still hit it even if not “trying” to strike perfectly - helping the brain break the need-for-control speed restrictor.

No idea of the scientific efficacy of the idea but simple enough to give it a try?

It’s definitely quite extreme. What launch monitor was it on?

Now you are getting technical, no idea. All I know is that the set up is extremely good, all in behind the main pro shop. Been there for years and at one point he started boasting about the accuracy of the speed monitor which I didn't really listen to. They refer to it as a "Trackman Swing Studio", but perhaps that is a bit too vague to know what devices they are using.

He did say that I can send him videos of my swing any time. So, I might try and get up to the range this week, and fil some with and without the ball. See if I can spot anything, and see what he spots

Yeah, the pro did say that a lot of people have quick practice swings, although it is usually a few mph. He was pretty shocked to see the difference in mine was constantly around 15mph, even when I tried to swing comfortably in the practice swing, rather than bust a gut.

I do have an unusual takeaway, and despite getting it back to a good position, I have no confidence where the club head it. So, I think I must be locking down parts of my swing when the ball is there, for fear of, like you say, missing the ball or massively mis-hitting it.

You need to do a few sessions of Bryson style speed training, just smash it as hard as you can and don’t care where it goes.

On Trackman I can get a flat out swing without a ball to about 113mph (the new speed training feature), with a ball I max out at 109mph when speed training but when playing courses on it or even out on the course it’s more like 100-104mph. I have hit some monster drives this year on course (all wind assisted) when I’ve really tried to go after them but I’ve also skied a few as well.

I'm seriously debating going for a bit of speed training over the winter - but Dean's Rypstick in the opening post seems to be about 200 quid, which is too rich for my blood.

Anyone got a recommendation of a solid bit of speed training gear that doesn't cost a bomb? Preferably with a guide/programme included so I'm not just swinging blindly.

My coach recommends these, slightly cheaper because you use your own driver shaft.

Speedstix

Try this from affordable golf

Seems decent for the price £45, easily put into your bag for the range and won’t break the bank.

I use the Relentless Golf stick with adjustable weights......£69.99 on Amazon. It comes with a 12 week training plan.

You will need a speed radar though, PRGR is the recommended one usually.

You will gain speed doing it....worth the investment in my opinion.

Best bet might just be a used set of Superspeed sticks on eBay. They have released new ones so I'd imagine the older original ones will be going for cheap now. Much easier to have 3 sticks than faff around changing weights etc imho.

Most expensive part will be getting something to monitor the speed and you really do need it. Most will recommend the PRGR (might be able to find the Japanese version of it cheaper on AliExpress or something like that) and I use an old Sports Swing Speed Radar that Superspeed used to recommend years ago.

I've got this one, think they have stopped making it so people are trying to claw your eyes out for it. No idea why, it's a bog standard radar and does nothing except measure your speed. It can't measure ball speed etc like the PRGR can.

I bought the Superspeed sticks and that radar off eBay nearly 6 years ago now for £230 so you can get a deal if you keep your eyes open.

If budget is a concern, just using your current driver will still give gains. Bonus if it is adjustable, so you can remove a weight from it to go lighter.

Depending on your training background, getting a medicine ball to chuck around is generally pretty good bang for your buck.

The part you can't so easily get around is some kind of radar measuring device though, you you can track progress and see what actually works.

Interesting thread and I'm keen to get going, so prgr has just been purchased from amazon. Going to really get on with improving my speed over the winter. I reckon I max out at about 102 atm. It's important as I think I'm going to be joining a course that's about 500 yards longer than my current course. Does anyone have any apps where they record the speeds or just use a spreadsheet.

Welcome. I use the Rypstick app it keeps a record of all my sessions, I did then use that to plot it into a graph on excel but that was just for sharing on here.

You will definitely see an improvement, I haven't done it for a little while due to suddenly being made of glass but I'm hoping to be back on it soon!

I used a spreadsheet for years then installed the superspeed app a few months ago but only did a couple of sessions and logged them in that.

I’ll be starting my speed training again soon so will continue to log in the app.

Was on Trackman last night and to my surprise I haven’t lost any speed at all this season, if anything I might have actually gained a tiny bit. Really excited to start speed training again this winter to see if I can push on.

Speed with driver was 105mph and i hit a few 260 carries while feeling like I wasn’t swinging out my shoes. Those distances were my good hits on my speed training swings back in March. Hopefully I can push that up to 108 or 109 over the winter.

Do you weight train as well to help with the training?

Would love to give this a bash

I have no idea what fast feels like tbh like I can swing harder but not sure that would equal faster

I did a bit of speed sticks training before, liked the gains but my swing got all over the place with it and my back was killing me.
2/3 weeks ago I've joined Liam Robinson TGN group and did some drills from there. Speed wasn't even on the list but as a byproduct I've gain distance across the whole bag
