There, I've taken the first step!!
Whenever I have a bit of a lay-off from the game, even just a couple of weeks, everytime I'm chipping from 30yds and in I totally bottle it, decelerate on my swing and just nob it!
I had an hour's practice today and to start with it was like I've never played before! I had to have a stern word with myself for being such a pussy and then got back into it and felt fairly sharp, but the odd one kept creeping in and its very frustrating!
Since I've been playing its allways been a bit of a problem and I do spend the majority of practice time on chipping but its allways there!
Anyway I needed to get that off my chest, feel better now(ish)!
Does anyone else have this problem or more interestingly what is your main problem that you would love to get rid of?

There's nothing like that feeling when you feel like you're hitting a chip really hard and it goes very little distance, grips and spins instead of streaking straight across the green.

Or so I'm told, never done it myself. :)

Currently looking for a good shrink to cure my chipping psychosis. Even that bloody v-easy thing I got from some dodery old guy isn't helping. My name is Homer and I chip like a girl. Nope don't feel any better for that

Think of your backswing being shorter and steeper and your follow through being longer and lower, and as you say, don't slow down.
Ball in the centre of your stance, hold at the bottom of the grip, weight 70-30 on your front foot and keep it there throughout the swing. :)

I really am greatful for the advice bob but to be honest its pretty much the same as what my pro told me and it still creeps in! I was also told to hit it like a cricket "safety" shot and regards to the swing, slow back, fast forwards. I know with practice I will improve but it really is my biggest demon!
Maybe I just need to grow a set!?

Technically, it's not too difficult to learn and when you "get it" you'll think what was all the trouble about.
Just make sure your hands stay in front of the clubhead and practice :)and remember it's not difficult

Good luck.

I do use an 8 iron quite a lot around the greens and just "putt" with it. I'm talking more about chipping over stuff, or when the ball needs to get up quick and stop quick.

My problem is and always has been, is to look up too soon after striking the ball. If I stay down and not come up too soon it usually ends in a good strike, especially wedge shots.

I suppose it must be a concentration thing, because I can walk up to the ball saying to myself, stay down, don't look up too soon and hey presto, I thin it, fat it, knob it, anything but a good strike  But I do have to say that it happens less and less these days.

Golfmmad.

You haven't had the chipping yips then Bob ? Was the stongest part of my game, know i dread anything but a full shot.

I know you're a pro bob but just out of interest, whats your biggest golf demon? If any?

I almost gave up years ago because of you-know-whats and if I dont play alot the odd one sneaks back but it's just me being careless.
The rest is ok most of the time

Does anyone else have this problem

Yes. Terrible. It's the first thing to go.

In the spring/summer I'm up for any kind of chip or pitch shot and trust myself. After the winter lay-off, it's like being a beginner again.

I could have written your post (and have nearly done so a few times), im exactly the same, I spend so much time practicing but can never do so freely because my mentality is all wrong and I get the jitters.

if its a question of keeping the club going through the ball perhaps tell yourself that 5ft past the pin is no worse than 5ft short of the pin (on the majority of greens)and if it goes past the hole it stands a lot more chance of going in! ;)

Which is pretty much exactly word fit word what my pro had me change and doing Tuesday, I feel much more confident after an hour chipping lesson. Bob has it bang on (from my experience) but if your that bad book a lesson, rip it down and get some drills in place.

I found putting a golf ball under my right foot when chippin helped generate the weight distribution on my left side, the minute you try to central your weight your right foot moves on take away ;)

I'd rather thin it through the green than duff it a few feet. I try to shorten and slow my back swing to ensure my swing gets faster, not slower during the downswing.

Which again is what I'm told is correct. A drill I got shown was for a 20ft chip, only go up 18 inches to 2ft but swing throw as if playing a full shot, it was impossible to slow down when you needed to swing the club to the top of the follow through

Unfortunately this happens to be true , but this year we're gonna get you chipping freely and get that h/c down where it should/could be
