My handicap is too low (apparently)

Just to be clear, i don,t want to play off 20. My handicap was 13 for a couple of years, i entered a sustained slump and have gone up to 14. I have resisted entering comps in the hope that the slump would end. It isn,t. I guess the question is, when does a slump become permanent?

The slump becomes permanent when you stop entering comps because of it :D

Get back playing competitions, try playing with different folks. If you don't play you have no chance of your handicap finding its level.

Remember you need three cards in a year to keep the handicap as a Competition handicap. Loose that status and you need three cards just to get it reinstated.

If in England, presumably it was an ESR, so not within the control of the committee. If it was in Scotland and a general play adjustment, then presumably 2 shots is about right given that's what ESR would have given anyway?

Not been involved for a couple of years since the ESR came in. Confess I haven't read up on this in too much detail and assumed it was a recommendation like the Annual Review report was and could be over-ridden by the committee who have the ultimate responsibility?? If it's just automatic then fine, didn't realise. Not much point in having a handicap committee nowadays then?

It can be over-ridden, but handicap secretaries are encouraged to apply it.

The slump ended a couple of years ago ... You will know how bad you are, with some assistance you might get yourself back to playing like a 14 handicapper. I hope you do, good luck.

It is a mystery how initial HC are worked out.
I was lucky and brought mine with me, but the other 3 mates who joined at the same time had too put cards in.
I've played with these guys for a few years in society and think I could estimate there reaslitic HC.

One of them was about right, one got a 20 HC when his cards, quite rightly, suggested lower.

And the unfortunate one who plays off 24 for the society and still not got anywhere near to winning, put 3 cards in over 100 (par 70) and gets a HC of 20!! He will not hit buffer all year...

And the society has reduced his HC to suit!!!!!!!

No mystery a fairly straight forward proceed where all triples are rounded to doubles and SSS subtracted. The lowest score left from 3 cards is initial starting handicap.

No mystery, but occasional aberrations while the player gets used to the course.

A previous handicap should be considered.

It took me 6 months to play to handicap when I went back up to the links course in Scotland from a Parkland South East England course. A decent number of buffers, but nothing better!

Sorry to hijack but a very quick question. I'm in the process of putting in my 3 cards. Is it the average of the 3 or the best? Only reason I ask is my first card was the worst I've played in years. (96) then 2 days later my 2nd card was 80. It's par 72. Usually shoot somewhere between 80-85.

It's the best so with 80 on par 72 if SSS is 72 too then 8 could be in the offing, previous playing history and previous handicaps can have a bearing too but primarily it's best card.

Thanks for your reply. Will they look at the 96 and think maybe 8 is too low? I was probably expecting something around 10-12.

SSS is 71 off the yellows and 72 off the whites.

Not at my place. I submitted 3 cards on Friday, an 81, 86 and a 90 and they gave me 13 today!

Par is 72.

Played today and shot a 77 for what would have been 44 points!!!I

Usually play to about 9 so sent the GM an email asking if he wants to cut it a bit so I don't get labelled a bandit when i enter a comp.

The is potentially some rounding down off trebles in the 96? Anything above a double is made a double.

Think I had 2 trebles and a quad in it. Had 6 pars and a birdie so I was 25 over for the other 11 holes. Hopefully get the last card in over the weekend or early next week and see what they give me.
