I can't believe how excited she is to be starting to play golf. She did have a dable many years ago and said how much she enjoyed. So armed with my credit card and an E-bay login I set about getting her set-up with a set of clubs. I never ealised what fantastic bargains are available on there to get a beginer a set of clubs to get them going. Callaway X-12 5-SW with Gems shafts £74, Yonex Nanospeed i 13 degree driver ladies Aldila shaft £33 and a Callaway X 3 & 5 wood with gems shafts £72. Gave her my Titleist carry bag so she is ready to go. So in total a bank breaking £179 spent. Now comes the best bit....she likes my 2-ball putter so she is going to inherit that once it has a pink grip put on it for her. Well that means I can go and buy that Scotty Cameron Kombi putter that I have been trying to justify buying. Now to take her up the golf club in the morning to the range and see how she gets on. Put her on the right lines and get her swinging the club then get her some lessons and take it from there.

She will send you broke once she get into it and needs to fill up that bag with a 1000 quids worth of gear.
Not sure if i would like the missus to play would be alright if she headed off with her friends but not sure if i would want to spend another 4 hours with her every sunday.

Don't worry Mike, once they get in to it and find their own wee group, you're Sunday history :)
I don't like playing against my wife, she always beats me... (in fairness her dad is a teaching pro and she has been playing and learning from him for 26 years) but in seriousness we usually pop up to the GC on a Sunday at the same time but once we are there I don't see her again until it's time to come home and pick our wee boy up from his granny.
It does have it's advantages though as she totally gets my obsession with the game so I don't ever find myself having to "justify" anything golf related - it's a great side effect of the fact that she sometimes wants to play against me... And one day, I WILL win :whoo:

I really do see the benefit of my girlfriend playing. Can meet her up the course after work for a few holes most nights of the week, can play with my mates on a Saturday then play with her on a Sunday, got a partner for mixed comps, can take the clubs on holiday and get to spend more time with her while doing something that I love. What could be better? Another plus side is that my club is doing a deel for peoples partners who are just taking up the game. No joining fee and get to join for £250 until they get to a point that they have an official handicap.

i tried to get my wife to play but her answer was "why do i want to walk around a F...ing field hitting a stupid white ball " fair enough !!

I got the same response, part of me thought it would be more playing time so win win, but then part of me enjoys the time away from her........ The juries still out

I was reading this and thinking how good it was of your to get her into the game, then got to the bit about buying a new Scotty... then it all made sense. The true reason is revealed! ;)

It's a clever forumula... this time next year, you convince here she wants your 8.5* stiff driver, and then go shopping again....

There is no downside to all this. I got wifey to play 2 years ago, so got to play in loads of mixed comps at ours and had a great social golf life. This year she has decided to not bother. She just hasn't the drive to keep playing, bin there done that tee-shirt would sum her up. I'm very disapointed, as I really thought she had a talent for it. To compensate me, the golf gods have given me a very cheap deal at my local club, so i've changed clubs and saved £400.

Its my job to come home after a game and moan to the missus about how crap I was or about the 4 ball in front holding me up. It wouldnt sound right if she did the moaning for this as well!

In fact, the missus asked me the other day why it takes pros around 4 hours to get around and why it takes me 7. I just said because they are very good. That secret would be out in the unlikely event she took up the game.

No thanks!

If my Mrs were to announce that she wanted golf lessons I'd be very worried what kind of relationship she was having with the pro. Golf is my thing and she has very very little interest. I do wish we had somesort of common interest though.

She asked me about starting to play and I am well up for it. Like you said it would be nice to have some sort of common interest apart from being foody type people. We have speant far too much time eating nice food that is why I have just had to shed 2 1/2 stone in weight. Having a common interest will be fantastic and I am really looking forward to it.

Good luck pal. On the food issue there's been times in the past where I've literally had to steal to eat so when I got better job and the planets started lining up we took it a bit too far. Hence us both dieting now. Might get her down the range....

My wife showed a bit of interest when i started.

She had a weeks lessons, purchased 3 pairs of shoes and variouse cloths to go with, plus a st of clubs.

she's not touched any of it since, in fact i nicked her bag for the winter when my old one wore out.

As much as I love our lass, golf time is my time, and the only real time I get to myself these days with having a 1 year old son, so wouldn't want her to come golfing with me. Luckily she has no real interest in playing, loves watching it on the telly though!

I'd hate my tart to start playing golf, getting away from her going to play golf for 5 hrs is my time.

Although If she did try it I'd let her play in front of me and just keep hitting balls at her ;)
