I posted a couple of weeks ago about my putting woes. I was struggling with contact and had some suggestions for what to do next, including the Dave Hick's Got the VIBE shaft insert. I rechecked everything and slightly adjusted my set up.

I then contacted a wonderful man at City Golf, Arthur Bates. Arthur is the Dave Hicks rep and was keen to ensure I was having lessons, had my putting checked recently etc before looking at new equipment. He also suggested I look at my tempo to improve quality of stroke.

So I revisted the videos Bob posted regarding judging distances. Rather than looking at his stroke length I looked at his tempo and tred to replicate. I'm now stroking the ball with a slower smoother tempo and am putting much better. In my round yesterday I putted, chipped and pitched so much better than I ever have :)

It's just a shame that my long game went AWOL for the majority of the round, hit nine decent tee shots all round and scored +3 for those holes (birdie, 5 pars, two bogeys, one double). Sadly I can't work on it as I've injured my back but hoping it is just some short term soreness.

Anyway, just wanted to say thank you to those that gave me a virtual slap round the face on the 'Am I good enough for my Scotty' thread. Scotty is staying put, though I'm still going to give one of those VIBE things a go. It costs nothing to try it so why not give it a whirl. :)

Yep, that tempo video really helped me when I couldnt lag a putt within 6 feet, glad Scotty isn't taking the flack any more, once you trust it I'm sure it will be a formidable weapon.

I tried to google that vibe shaft but nothing interesting came back! ;)

I too have been using Bobs videos on putting, went out at the weekend to practice and within 20 mins my stroke and distance judgement was much improved.

I used my favourite putting green drill:

1) Find a straightish uphill putt over distances of about 10-20 feet.

2) Place a stick, v-easy, putting green "flagstick" about 3 feet behind the hole (close for shorter putts, further for longer putts if desired).

3) Putt to the hole from the same spot 5 times

4) Scoring:
a) Anything short of the hole is -2 points.
b) Anything hole high left or right OR hits the backstop is -1 point.
c) Any putt that is less than 2 foot wide and between the hole and the backstop is +1 point.
d) Anything holed out is +2 points.

From 15 feet I was scoring about 2 or 3 points, throw in Bobs videos and some V-Easy practice and I jumped to 4 or 5 points with the odd 6 thrown in!

Its a great game to get you getting past the hole as well as getting consistency up, try and score 4-5 points every time, with the correct backstop distance for the putt length this should not be difficult. I have used it up to 30 feet with a 6 foot backstop before, but for those longer lengths its sometimes hard to find a suitable bit of ground on some putting greens without getting in others way.

I love making up games, this is defiantly one of my favourites for distance control and tempo as short putts are penalised severely!

Golfer says "Club isn't to blame"

I changed my putting grip today for no other reason than I couldn't make my putting any worse. quite remarkably I putted a lot better.

At the weekend at the practice green I changed a few things, lethal I know! First a lighter grip as I was choking the thing and tensing up. Second I was forcing myself to putt on a straight line which was making the back stroke very bobbly so just let it go where it needed which was a slight arc. Loads better. Still struggle every now and again on lag putts though.

Took the odyssey white ice #9 out tonight. Just felt really comfy with it although the insert was an issue and I left a few putts short. Felt better at address and over the ball though. Not sure what the issue is. I've been using the putting mirror and v-easy and so happy it isn't set up, technique or tempo. Might just be a blip and sticking with the Anser 2 is the way to go. Wondering if a change of putter grip to something new and tackier may help
