Off on hols soon and need a new mp3 player with a reasonable screen ( ~ 2 inch) for up to 50 sheets.

SanDisk Jam Clip or SanDisk Clip Sport. Does everything you need for not much money.

Depends how much you value quality over a friendly user interface. I have one of these https://www.whathifi.com/fiio/m3/review and it is streets ahead in terms of sound of any other MP3 player I have tried, including a few SanDisks . It's just that the user interface is not overly friendly. But if you couple it with a pair of these Beyerdynamics https://www.stuff.tv/features/best-cheap-in-ear-headphones-reviewed/winner-beyerdynamic-byron you will have a really excellent set up for less than 100 quid.

Surprisingly pretty good. Obviously it comes with some drawbacks since it's only £28.

are mp3 players not an endangered species? I went through a few in the past, but for the last 5 or 6 years I've just used my phone and a streaming service, don't see the point in having a separate device.

Saves you reloading them all when you get a new phone. Saves you using up all your phone's data (I had over 5000 songs on my old iPod). In my case, my phone battery is shagged and only lasts about 5 hours as it is, so playing music on it would only decrease that exponentially.

Got a long haul flight so want something that's not going to drain my phone.

Thinking i may go down the hi res route now.
