Get them to do the move.
They can provide all necessary packing cases (maybe at a small charge).Fill cases room by room and clearly mark on each which room it is to be placed in your new home.
Good luck. I hope HID changes her mind.

Removal company all the way for me. I had them in to pack and move. They came in the day before and packed the house top to bottom, had all the vans loaded up by 10.00 the next morning and by mid afternoon I was in my new house with everything unloaded. They took apart any large furniture and re-built it at the other end, everything went in the room it was needed in, perfect and hassle free. Must be more expensive down your way though as I think that service cost about £700 all in.

I've used Pickfords twice to move. Their packing service is great. My wife was a bit wary about it at first and wanted us to move ourselves but she now agrees it was worth every penny.

Man or Mouse ?? Just tell her what you;'re doing man, its too big a task to do yourself unless you have a hell of a lot of friends, and even then, at £100 saving, its a no brainer.

We found a company who moved us and who did an excellent job for about £400, it was unbeleivable, 2 fella's who didnt stop, and God knows how they did it all in one day, it would have killed me.

If she moans about the cost, tell her that you're happy for her and 3 friends to do it instead.

Come clean with her.

Tell her that you have asked for the advice and out of about 20 replies not one person has advised doing it yourself, in fact they have all advised against it.

Do the packing yourself, that's fine. The removal Co usually will supply suitable packaging (for a charge :() but let them do the move. You know it makes sense.

You could always play the woman's card. Suggest that if she really loved you, she wouldn't ask you to put your sanity and bad back and shoulder at risk. ;)

We did the move ourself thing over the weekend last time we moved and that was so much hassle and that was only from verwood to west moors. The biggest problem you will face is that you have more stuff than you realise and it will take more trips than you planned. We had a real rush trying to get everything over in time and they are long and tiring days.

I hope you win your 'discussion' but if you dont i can recommend this van hire company www.abacusvanhire.co.uk

HID is due to give birth in just over 2 weeks but if i am available i'll happily give you a hand unloading as you are moving round the corner from me.

I can't say how appreciative I am for your offer, though it might be Monday or Tuesday, which has it's own problems at finding volunteers, which again the Mrs fails to understand.

Did I mention that she's a reasonable woman. ;)

Anyway. You'll have your own hands full. Is this the first one?

depending on your age or when you passed your driving test would determine if you could rent a 7.5t truck.
with a tail lift it makes the heavier items so much easier.

some years ago, maybe 5 or 6 i helped move a family friend, on hand to help was two women and a 10 year old, so did pretty much of it myself, collected truck, loaded and drove from coventry to barry by tea time.

it can be done, but if you can afford a removal company go for it, as previously posted removal firms have insurance against any damage to your property

Go the removal company route. Get as many quotes as possible, then play each company against each other. Companies want the work, you want it as cheap as poss. barter away my good friend.

I'd look online at packaging material suppliers,

when you call them ask for 2nd hand boxes, you'll normally pay less than half price,
speak to you local newsagent and local paper and ask for any undelivered copies
Buy your tape from a stationary shop, cheaper than removals, packaging suppliers. Just make sure it is high tack.

But definitely go with the removals company, I have a team that carries out removals day in day out, and when it comes to getting sofa's and large items in the properties without making any damage to either its worth the extra pounds laid out.

They will be covered for any damage whereas if you break anything you pay for it. Also make sure you label the boxes up clearly which room they go in, and keep the kids out of the way. There is nothing worse when trying to move items with kids under your feet (no matter how nice they are) if possible pack the kids in boxes too. :D

Make sure you disconnect all your leads, and keep them together for each room in one container per room. Tape the doors and drawers of all furniture shut, makes it easier for the removals guys to handle. Make sure you have all your white goods cleared and disconnected too, they wont disconnect these normally.

If there is anything else you want to know, drop me a pm mate. Its a fact that moving house is one of the top3 stresses in life. So do everything you can to make it easier on you.

I'm going to echo every one else. use the removal company

5 years ago I moved myself out of a two bedroom flat and it almost killed me and my father in law. The van hire vs removal company price difference was about £300.

I've since moved with a couple of young kids to a larger house and didn't even consider doing it myself. We went for the 'pack yourself option'. We bought boxes & bubblewrap from the removal company and spent about a week before the move packing. The day itself was really easy, despite the £800 bill. Six months later we still aren't fully unpacked.

The removal company are worth every penny, get one that is fully certificated and insured and you can't go wrong

I have done several moves in the last few years. My brother moved from a flat to a new house, my parents moved home and my father in law as well. Now I am in the fortunate position of having a couple of vans in my business. I got the moving parties to pack everything and then myself and a few freinds and family members did the moves. All any of them got paid was with gratitude and a few beers, but then again they all know if they have to move in the future they only have to ask me for a hand and loan of the vans.
If you can't round up a willing group though I would use the removal firm.

Tell her you can't possibly sort out the logistics of a house move seeing as you can't even make it out of a golf course carpark!!!!

Defo use the removal firm, they are insured, have very strong backs and will even pay up when they scrape the wall getting the spare oven and washing machine up into the bedroom (for when the wife is ill and can't make it downstairs) LOL :)

Your Mrs is not being fair.

I moved 3 months ago with Mrs and 2 little ones, everyone said get professionals in and they were right, you'll do yourself in trying to move beds and furniture. We hired pros and I was amazed how good they were, perfectly organised and not one plate or cup or anything broken.

We went with Clark and Rose - cannot recommend them highly enough. Cost £1700 but we'd a lot of stuff and it was a longish move.
