In contrast to the 'Most over-rated' thread, which has come up, pretty much, with the usual suspects,

This time cost really is a factor so course cost so should be in the 'easily affordable' category - as visitor rather than member's guest that can be somewhat daft (Muirfield has more than trebled to an outrageous £10! and Gullane 1 is still apparently a fiver!).

At 55/70 for Midweek/Weekend, my favourite fun course (The Shire London) is probably a bit pricey to qualify.

Camberley Heath - at 49/55 - gets my vote for a single round. Lovely Harry Colt design with the short pat 4s still being fabulous features.

Value wise a twilight 4 ball at Callander for £40 is amazing value. Cracking little course with beautiful views of Ben Ledi and surrounding hills. Great fun track as well. Recommended.

I really liked Camberley Heath, felt the last few hole let it down a little bit but it was in fantastic condition.

Despite being £99 in the summer for the day (one round on each of the courses), i think Saunton offers amazing value. The East course is truly memorable and the West isnt much worse! In the winter (October - end of April) county card holders (which all members who have access really should have) can get the 36 holes deal for under £50!! that truly is unbeatable!

At between £42-£47 I'm going to big up my own course, Ealing, in this category.

You wont find a better conditioned course and the greens are immaculate. We had people coming over from Wentworth at the PGA last year to play a few holes and try the greens and all left very impressed.

Not the longest course, but plenty of good holes, and the condition makes it a joy to play.

Wrotham Heath in Kent (I had never heard of it until I was invited a few weeks ago) is a great golf course. Not long, but a tight and testing heathland style course. Only £30 for a visitors green fee, and a very welcoming professional too.

One of the magazines produces a ranking list of best value courses under £50. Perranporth is on that list, bit quirky with loads of blind shots but really good fun to play, I think it has to be a contender.

And see the comment above about county cards.....if you are a club member.....GET ONE!!

Hollins Hall, played the other week for £12.50 and it was in near perfect condition. Can get on for around this price most of the time on various sites or the most is £25 which is still a cracking deal.

£40/50/60 for a round of golf and thats value for money ???

Entering opens is the way forward. I have just applied for 5 this year. Good courses every one of them. Total green fees £85.

Dunno how much opens are in England but up here you are between £10 -20 a round and they are generally open to high handicappers and almost always on a Saturday.

You're getting a much better deal up there. I have 2 scratch opens in the next couple of weeks, both at good courses but typically about £40-50 a time down here for 36 holes and lunch.

Still very good value though compared to a normal green fee plus we play off the competition/championship tees :)

We paid just over £40 to play Saunton East last November and that included lunch. Same deal on the West.

We have paid £220 each to play St Andrews Old, Jubilee and the Castle course this October, choosing our tee off times. Great deal bearing in mind the quality and condition of the courses. We also get £20 to spend on drinks in the clubhouse.

Formby for £55 including soup and sarnies, in March only, and as long as in a fourball.

This was a bargain.... Here's an outsider.... Walton Hall Muni in Warrington. At £16 a round it's the best muni I've ever played! Great green, really interesting course and a pretty tough test to boot.....

Appleby in Cumbria. Always a dry course - built on sandy soil. Can be very breezy but the views are stunning. There's a cracking par 3 on it that crosses a river twice before the green. Bizarrely they still have a joining fee but with annual fees of only £290!!

Their Easter Open weekend is brilliant. Book a B&B in the town, and play singles on Good Friday & 4BBB on the Sunday. There's also a 4BBB in Sept, £22 a pair...

I have heard this and that the food van half way round is the best....When was the last time you played it?

Walton hall is a great course. I used to alternate between there, regents pk, Duxbury pk and Heaton pk when I started playing. All really good courses.
Im sure the Walton hall Butty Van was called Bobs, I always used to pay him a visit after the front 9.

Isn't Heaton Park the one with the hills....
