Whats the most underrated course you've played?

I quite like the Old Course at Essendon Country Club (Was London Hatfield GC). Lovely surroundings, nice mix of holes, bit of water here and there. And, whenever I play it it's never that busy, almost have the course to yourself.

Much prefer it to the new course. The few times I've played it, it wasn't in great condition.

Seriously?

West Cornwall is possibly the most dangerous course I've ever played! They have built too many tees back down the fairway in an attempt to lengthen the course and this puts you in the firing line of wayward shots from the group behind. I had 3 VERY close calls in one round there, I'd recommend wearing a hard hat if you play it.

It was quiet so didn't notice...

Totally agree Qwerty - I was expecting a lot as I had read a lot of reviews and it still surpassed expectations - I would go so far as to say that it is not a long way behind Sunningdale and the best of the best - just needs a bit more tree clearance to take it the next level, typified by the par 3 (8th??) which desperately needs the left side of trees cut back severeally to make it an awesome hole.

Id say its probably the most well balanced course Ive played, the holes are so varied without it being "quirky", course wise it seems to have a little bit of everything.
I rate courses on one thing... How much I've enjoyed it when I drive out of the car park. I think most of the time when these courses are ranked too much emphasis is put on how much of "a test" the course is.
I think BD gets it just right, a good/fair test for the club golfer but also very enjoyable.

I honestly don't remember seeing many signs out on the course Mike. Surprising Really as I would usually notice that kind of thing as I do like a course to feel as natural as possible and something like that would generally take the edge off it for me also.

They were all off the fairway Dave so you didn't see any, Mike was reading them whilst looking for his balls ;)

That's all my competition entries scuppered

After my recent excursion oop norf I have to say that Formby filled me with so much admiration and had so much of everything that, I ended up appreciating West Lancs GC over and above Hoylake which I found a little bland and boring!

I thought West Lancs course was tougher and had more variation to that of Hoylake and with all of Hoylakes history, I was underwhelmed after being spoilt at Formby.

Someone above has mentioned Drayton Park, what a cracking little course that is, played it last summer, short but very testing with accuracy for the short game being the order of the day. Very much like Tadmarton Heath, another great short course with a links feel to it.

I also really liked Blackmoor last year which was my first Heathland experience.

Playing BD in their open in July so interesting to read some of the comments about their course.

Beau has to be one of the most underrated course's in the UK.
Fantastic range of holes, and always well presented.

Mike,
i'm aware of some of the signs you mention, but from a personal point of view i've never encountered any sort of snobbery or stuffiness, and i've played there numerous times. If anything i've found the members and staff to be very warm and welcoming.I played an open am am there in 2004,my team did very well and made the prize's,but we were a little concerned about staying for the presentation as none of us had a change of clothes. We explained the situation to one of the committee and we were told they would happily make an exception for us as we had travelled a fair distance to get there. On another visit we sat chatting with some of the older members, who gave us a history lesson about Beau and also explained that when they became members a large percentage of the membership were normal working class folk who worked in local mines, furnace's etc. Before we left one of the group ordered a round of drinks for everybody and invited us to come back and play anytime and that he would sign us in,it turned out that he was the handicap secretary (RIP Barry).

You won't be dissapointed Robin

Remember that great stretch of holes at Formby, from about the 7th onwards, Parts of BD have very similar feel.

Another shout for Beau Desert. Still makes me chuckle when I remember the captain was out in a buggy meeting and greeting everyone. He'd given us the all clear to drive on one hole when the group ahead had cleared........walking down the fairway, I think it was Pokerjoke that didn't realise he was the Captain and said...."thanks Marshall".... :o

Also who can forget TimGolfys first ever drive at a GM meet?....topped it 20 yards straight into the clag........

Great course......great memories.....

It's the cry of "Aaww Tim" that makes it.

(I'm a mean git raking this up, no offence Tim!)

Edit: I seem to have a hazy memory of doing the same thing on my second round, but surely I can't have done? :o

I would have said Sherwood Forest, but it seems to be getting into the top 100 lists a bit recently so one could argue it's now getting the recognition it deserves.

The Eden course at St Andrews is a cracking 18 holes. Not all great but plenty crackers especially the front 9, brilliant greens and lovely location. In fact I really find the greens the most interesting of the St Andrews courses.

Pitreavie stays in my mond too nly having played it the once.
