Too many young players from the UK are getting golf scholarships from the USA, I think they would be better honing their golf at home.
Instead of playing in near perfect conditions every day where they can attack pins with high approach shots that stop quickly basically target golf, they would have to contend with poor weather, hard greens, high winds etc which can only improve their game by having them trying a larger variety of shots at home.

Is there anything wrong with making a nice living out of golf without winning a major or even a tournament. I would love to be in that position.

Honey I’m home………..how did you get on………..I finished 33rd………..ah don’t worry dear it will improve………..I’m not worried, I picked up a nice wee £25,000 cheque, that on top of the other finishes this year means that we can get that £500,000 home you wanted. ……..ah that’s nice.

So there we have it, some golfers…..no, most tour pro golfers, are there to make a living, it's their job. Only the very few have that bit extra that drives them forward to greatness.

It's a bit like football, lots of really good pros who make a good living week in week out without being in the top teams or playing for their nation.

While I’m in the mood……..Scotland only has 5 million people, England around 40 million. Think about it, If for argument sake you were only allowed to pick golfers from London, that’s 8 million, how many good pros would you get going back over the years.

Sometime we expect way too much.

You should go into things will the sole intention of trying to be the best possible. Whether golf is your job, or shoveling [****] is.
When you tee up the ball at the weekend, don't you want to win the medal, take the money of the lads, or get cut?

I would love to say to my boss 'I am gonna take it easy now boss, I am on a good salary and happy with the company car, cheers by the way'

His reply?

&*%$ YOU YA £%&*&6* YOUR @?&*^%é FIRED !!!!!!!!!!

I have just had a thought. Why doesn't Ian Poulter do a Cobra add and say :

'hey guys, why not go and buy these new irons at £600 so I can be a mediocre golfer for the rest of my pathetic life'

Perhaps big insentives to win majors don't work (D.Clarke's £2m offer from Dunlop if he bagged one)

Maybe it should be IF YOU DON'T WIN A TOURNEY YOU ARE OUT ON YOUR ERSE

I’m not sure you get my point, I was being a little sarcastic with my posting earlier. It’s just my opinion but it takes all kinds of pro golfers, or any profession for that matter, to make up a field.

Most of these guys out there will be trying their absolute best to do their best, but one golfer has got to be better than the other. So, there will always be someone in 33rd place who’s trying their best to make a living at pro tour golf.

We all tend to look at the top guys, but if you look down the money order you will see guys who are playing week in week out to make a genuine living. It is a profession; it is a way of making a living and you don’t have to be the absolute best.

Most of the top guys are sorted for life, if you know what I mean. But the guys further down are grinding out a living and I for one think they sometimes get stick as if their not trying when in fact their probably trying harder than most.

I take my hat off to the guys who are making a living without being one of the superstars.

Steven O’Hara strolls along in his lovely BMW with all the air of a successful golfer because he has a few bob and a nice car. Where is his motivation.

Mmmm, At this moment Steven knows he’s not successful, but I don’t think he needs to downgrade to a Ford to let people know that. Just my opinion.

Found this quote from Steven “So, rather than moping around with my head down, I’ve been hitting a lot of balls over the holiday period. I’ve spent a lot of time with my coach, Ian Rae, and we have been working hard on every aspect of my game, especially my putting, which was the real reasons I struggled so badly last year. I’ve also spent a fair bit of time in the gym, to the point where I have never felt fitter in my life. Even better, it has been a while since I have felt so enthusiastic about playing”.

I was using this reference as a parallel to 'real life' and how my emloyer wouldn't like me to rest on my laurels and accept basic performance from me so why should companys who pay these guys vast sums of money accept that they are not trying harder to get to the next level away from their comfort zone.

In life I use these 3 key words when trying to achieve something;

Optimal Exceeded expectations

<font color="orange"> Desireable A level where I would be proud of myself

Essential The absolute minimum but still disappointing

I use these catagories to push me on and give me something to aim at but I get the impression that some golfers are happy with ESSENTIAL.
