Mobile phones at golf clubs - your view?

Re: Mobile phones/golf club - your view?

Texting does take time even for those adept at it & down the fairway it is going to slow things down, probably more than a quick call..... If you absolutely feel like it

In my mind few things are rarely so important to carry on a full conversation instantly. Same goes for texting on the course. By all means do it if your group is taking a lengthy stop at the halfway house if there is one. Otherwise leave calls till you get back to the clubhouse.

Texting can be discrete, but some people don't seem to know how to be discrete. As I've said I've used mine to text before, but I know people at work who every break are texting constantly & its probably more annoying than someone on the phone all the time. And constant texters seem to send absolutely meaningless pointless messages.

My texts are few & far between... I'll fit in what I need to say & only make another if I absolutely have to. If I were in the clubhouse the likelyhood of me using the mobile to text someone would be low.

As pointed out before. If I'm at the golf club I don't really wish to be disturbed by anything. I'll have it with me on silent. I'f I've felt it vibrate, quick glance see what the person was when descretly able to Or what the text was & then the phone gets instantly popped back in its pouch, to be left till I feel I wish to talk to or return a text to that person. Nothing is so important...rarely to interupt golf.

Re: Mobile phones/golf club - your view?

I do think phones should be allowed for emergency reasons, eg my wife is pregnant at the minute so I need a phone at all times, (just in case)

14 years ago when my wife was pregnant I never had a moby.......how on earth did I manage. ;)

People survived without cars 150 years ago. Doesn't mean we should remain in the 19th century.

But would you drive your car round a golf course ?

People drive those damn awful four wheel greenhouses around the courses.... where's the difference.

And I bet someone somewhere has driven around the course. Actually I have seen head greenkeeper at one course took his 4x4 pickup around the course one day... Made a bloomin mess of the fairways too. Guy wanted shooting imo.

Now the tricky question.

Have either of those things improved golf ? buggies are great if used by the old and infirm, who couldn't get out on the course without them. But anyone can use them and the twonkish boy racers that go around playing silly buggers 'just because they can' is exactly what will happen with 'phones.

The idea of them only being used when absolutely necessary will last for about, ooooh, say 3 minutes before some loud mouthed yob will start gobbing off to his girlfriend about what she's got to look forwrd to that evening, because he's just managed a par on the SI1, and Mr Bigboy is in town.

*shudders*

Actually that is a good point

*also shudders*

Must admit I'm still in the wear it but don't use it, other than as satnav or camera faction. But your examples are nightmareish.

by far the worst offenders on the course aren't the 'Mr Bigboys', it's the 'I'm Mr Irreplaceable' whose mobile is his office. He's the one who will be wanting WIFI in the golf buggies as he's so important that he just have to have his laptop with him.

Golf to this lot isn't the game it is to us - to them it's all about marketing themselves.

One of this breed was on the course ahead of me a short while ago. He took and made at least 9 calls, the shortest lasting over 3 minutes, the longest certainly not less than 10. He was the tee pacer. Needless to say he and his group let no-one through.

Unfortunately I've been over-civilised, too much so to treat him as he deserved.

Re: Mobile phones/golf club - your view?

Im all for the use of phones, silent or vibrate in the bag and check at the end of the round.
Waitng on Sat for the missus to call and be picked up from the station had it in my pocket on the pitch and putt.
kept it quite and short no disturbance to playing partners.
no ban in the clubhouse as tv on or music keeps it company
