I am on holiday Switzerland and decided not to take my camera and rely on phone.
I have found it almost impossible to see the screen in daylight to compose pics.
Any tips to alleviate this or should I use a proper camera in future?
Thanks

not a camera technical guy by any means.

On my iPhone if its bright in background I tap on the screen and it reduces the brightness in the background!

Not sure what the technical term is sorry!

I haven't taken a proper camera for 2-3 years. I just use my Sony phone. If the sun is right behind me it is a problem to view the screen but otherwise it is fine. Sorry if this is obvious but have you moved around so the sun is not directly behind you or is the problem there at all times?

May have answered your own question there! :D

Seriously though, if it's scenery, just concentrate on holding it level and it'll be fine "firing blind" 90% of the time, if it's portraits or group shots it's harder but if composition is really difficult stand a bit further away and crop the picture later. I'd say almost all the shots I take I will later crop to get the best pic if I'm going to use them for something other than clogging up by phone! Obviously depends on the camera quality but outside pics in good light are usually excellent on a modern mobile and can take a bit of zooming.

Thanks for all the replies.
It is a Samsung S5.
The problem is not only the composition of shots but also trying to see the camera on/off on the screen.
I think it will be a camera with viewfinder for me in future.

I had this problem with my android phone. To fix it I toggled the Auto-screen brightness to off to make the screen more bright manually. Worked like a dream. I've got an lg g3 so not sure where the setting is on yours. Just have a hunt about before you go out.

I have the same problems with modern compact cameras. Most seem to have screen only and no viewfinder, however the new Panasonic Lumix compacts have now gone back to include viewfinders which are actually a small LCD screen.
