you can't pick anything up for £25 that Mizuno make in SD .

Not quite sure what yyou are getting at?

Aston Martin don't spend that much on TV ads does that mean the are a budget brand, just cos you had not heard of mizuno does not mean anybody else has.

And how does selling a set of Irons starting at £500 upto £700 make them budget?

I think the OP meant it was perception caused by the lack of exposure Patrick, rather than them actually being cheap.
Granted I don't get the £25 SD comment either but I am sure it's more about Mizzies lack of commercial advertising.

Spent some time in Malaysia in the 90's and they were huge then as I think they still are in the far east. Different models to what was available here in the uk.....and they are now huge in China so not sure they are worried about their market position in old Blighty!
I was so taken by them back then that I traded my Hogan apex irons for a set of t zoid pros....and played my best golf ever, 7 handicap......! Loved them to bits!

Fantastic brand IMO and would still be using them but lost a lot of distance i get with them....tried mp 60 and 53's but up to two clubs short, so got a set of I15 to recover the distance...which they did...but would still be playing mizunos if it was not for that. And indeed Faldo and Lyle both won their majors with them I think.

One of the best brands in golf.....not sure about the woods though!

My perception of Mizuno began with the irons they released in the 80s, played by Faldo, Lyle, Ollie and others. Clean and unfussy clubs for better players. They also produced cavity back clubs, including some at a lower price point. As far as I can see, they have continued to produce the same types of clubs, although fashions and technology have changed, and their stuff is high quality and relatively low bling. They never had the large stable of players that TM has because they don't spend the same amount on marketing.

Their shoes are actually pretty good. They sell a lot of running shoes and baseball shoes in Japan and the US, so I think they know how to make them.

They don't release that many new clubs, and most are incremental improvements on previous models, and to be honest, often modest improvements, mostly aesthetic. The flagship models are the blade (MP68, 69) and players cavity (MP62, 63, 64), with the JPX probably the volume seller.

Their UK office is just down the road from Bearwood Lakes, and they have corporate memberships with us, so we tend to see their stuff a bit earlier than most, and there will be a special Mizuno fitting booth opening soon on our driving range.

Mizuno - thoughts on their brand? Excellent if rather expensive blades. Took over from where Wilson Staff blades left off as a blade of choice (my previous clubs comprised Wilson Staff Tour Blade Fluid Feel; Macgregor Eye-o-matic persimmon woods, and my trusty Acushenet Bullseye putter) . Often thought of buying some Mizuno blades - I still might.

Not had much golf gear but they used to make some of the best footy boots money could buy. Wore them for a number of years.

Their blades always look good if a little expensive when compared to certain other brands, same us true of titleist really.

They have been around making golf clubs for donkeys years. Always had a really good rep (Faldo etc used to use tp blades) the issue is that outside golf their reputation is a bit mixed so a new comer to golf may not have the same respect after all who has mizuno trainers??
As an aside, to me, Nike make clothes and shoes not clubs - I see their clubs as cheap and nasty (I know they are not!) and can't bring myself to buy some:smirk:. Guess it's personal choice.

I once looked at Nike clubs in the same way (I used to play Hogan 40th anniversary Apex blades, a gorgeous club if there ever was one), and then I hit Nike's VR Forged split cavity irons and never looked back. They are amazing clubs in every way. Check them out one day, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. Another way to look at it is, if they are suitable for the likes of Tiger Woods, Simon Dyson, Francesco Molinari, etc, then you know they're solid.

Hey, if you think Tiger is playing the same clubs available down your local big box golf store, then I am afraid you have been seriously misled. Same for his Nike golf ball.

Mizuno have made their name in golfing terms based on the quality of their irons and the fact that the mjorityof their range, certainly these days is forged. They have always had a reputation for quality products and at competitive prices. There are other forged irons out there by the likes of Titleist but these have always been aimed at the lower handicapper. With Mizuno there is a model to suit all abilities

Mizuno tell me "Yes - The JPX825 Pro will replace JPX800 pro. The new MP-64 is a combination of the MP-63 and 53." So no 54 coming and one less in the range.

So no MP54? i am close to tears....

Surprised as I thought the 53 was a good seller for them, looks like ill have to up my game and get some 59's if I want some new Mizzys.

Mizuno/Titleist = serious players clubs

Taylormade = latest 'must have' innovations

Ping = Game improver/old man's clubs

Callaway = Young & stylish

That's pretty much how I see the main brands. I'm sure some will tell me otherwise............

What about Macgregor?

I had/have Eye-o-matic persimmon woods and my first set of irons were Macgregor Tourney irons (birthday present 1976 from my dad - second hand - he 'lied' to my mum how much he paid for them). Still in my mind a very strong brand name - as to me is John Letters - my current irons. However Mizuno - Japanese - and NEVER cheap - always a quality product in my eyes.

It's all about perception. I was in the John Letters shop in St Andrews last week and they are churning out some gorgeous stuff right now (including a forged blade that is almost identical to the MP69) for quite a bit less money than the big names. But JL isn't a fashionable name to have in your bag these days.

I think McGregor are in the same situation.

Oh I agree about Macgregor - I thought about a set of their irons about 3 yrs ago but no - not right, but I'm willing to fly the flag for JL. I have a set of their first forged irons when they made their comeback 3 yrs back. F-7s - try Googling - you won't find much. Abut 200 sets produced I was told. Really beautiful looking and feeling blades - but they have a crap finish that has worn badly. I've complained but heard nothing. This is a great pity.

I just got a pair of mizuno football boots to trial about 3 weeks ago, absolutely amazing. The comfiest things I've ever worn!!!

I really think its down to how people perceive the brand, over here it's Adidas, Nike etc etc look far east and every athlete has mizuno on their feet??

Personally I think of well made, high spec clubs when I think mizuno.

Yes, that's what I meant, I wasn't digging at Mizuno as I mentioned in earlier posts in this thread.

My perception, from a young age, was that Mizuno were like Dunlop - a brand you can buy a driver from for £25. That perception may have been because of a lack of advertising.

Simples!

Wilson = niche market! Still the leading brand by Major wins. Always used to be geared towards good players but they are now producing some cavity backs that get great write ups. Not really tried their stuff TBH but heard some good reports. Also reasonably priced for a top brand.

I think McGregor are in the same situation.

Seeing as MacGregor's last manufacturing plant in Albany, Georgia closed down in 2007 I dont think they are in the same boat.
There are very few new MacGregor sticks floating around but unless someone revives the brand its resigned to history I'm afraid. Supppose that creates a goodarket for anyone selling these rare beauties [whistle smiley]…
