If the golf lesson goes ahead the pro is going to use this device to do a fit, are these really reliable as a proper custom fit, he's away till saturday so can't ask him, but do you have it attached to your present clubs or a mizuno demo club, I've been told it also only works with irons also.

It is a great starter for ten, I have been told that you use it as a guide and then you have to feel what is best for you.

I also have a question about it though. One of the things it mesures is temp. Could this be a good training aid? And does anyone know what the tempo scale is? the higher the better or what?

I did the test a few weeks ago, after 5 swings the info is fed into the computer and it gives a suggested shaft in each of the custom shafts Mizuno uses. I subsequently decided to go to the Mizuno custom fit in Banstead to have a full fitting as just having the closest shaft for my swing doesnt mean that I will have the correct loft, lie, grip and, most importantly, heads.

Hopefully, this time next week, I will have the exact Mizuno set up that suits me. I will probably do a write up on how it goes.

I dont think it works in the way you are hoping. It measures (I think) 5 things including swing speed and down swing tempo. The results have to be scrolled through and put into a comuter programme to mean much, and the tempo is related to the transition of backswing into downswing so that the best shaft for your transition can be offered - it isn't really any sort of training aid. Also, you cant buy one anywhere as far as I know

What happens if like me no 2 swings are the same ?

You do 3 swings and they feed them all into the PC, i believe it takes an average.

My recollection, you are swinging a 6 iron with it on. You take the readings from about 5 swings, they wont be hugely different with each and then, when fed into the computer it probably averages out the differences. My swing speeds felt different but the slowest was 80 mph and the fastest was 82 mph - they all felt different! it suggested shafts that were just into the stiff bracket.

It's a quality peice of kit.
It's just like a normal 6 iron and you set up and swing normally.
It measure swing speed as well as Tempo, Shaft toe Down , shaft kick angle and release factor.
After 3 swings you feed the data into the computer and it spits out a choice of 3 shafts in order of preference.
The fitter then checks the ball flight and makes a few tweaks to get the correct fit.
It does work. All shafts have different bend characteristics so the Gizmo works out which is best for you.

Club head speed is the speed of your swing (no surprise) 1 is slow 9 is quick.

• Tempo is speed of the change over at the top of the backswing mainly 1 is slow 9 is quick.

• Kick Angle is the amount of kick forward the club head has on the downswing 1 is not very much and 9 is a lot.

• Toe Down is the amount of droop or bowing downwards the shaft has through impact 1 is not a lot and 9 is lots. This one is kind of linked to the three aforementioned.

• Release Factor is whether you release early in the downswing or late. Early release or "casting" results in a higher RF number. Late release or swinging from the inside results in a lower number.

MY numbers were
SSpeed - 84
Tempo - 4
Toe Down - 2
Kick angle - 4
Release - 4

Luke Donald's were
Swing - 92
Tempo - 4
Toe Down - 4
Kick angle - 5
Release - 5

Really there is no such thing as an ideal set of numbers. All swings are individual and the DNA Optimizer just sorts through it all to get the best fit.

As a training aid, I guess it would cost a good few grand for the club and the software - I bet there are cheaper aids that would do the trick. All it can do is give you a reading, it can't help much more as an aid.

Imurg, that's really interesting. I've also wondered how these worked. Out of interest what shaft recommendations did those numbers result in for you? Apologies if I've missed it on an earlier post.

Cheers

It recommended Dynamic Gold S300's then Project X 5.5's, then KBS Tour Stiff.
Tried them all and the DG was the one and has since been backed up by much more consistent iron play.

Had the Full Monty.
Settled on MP58 heads, DGS300 shafts 1/2 inch longer than standard, standard lofts, 1 degree flat lie and standard size blue Mizuno GP New Decade multi-compound grips.
I just got 5-pw as I wasn't hitting a 4 iron well and had a hybrid that worked well but I'm getting the MP Fli-Hi 24 degree iron/hybrid in the same spec for Xmas as I find the 58's so good. Still need a bit of help with a 4 iron, hence the Fli-Hi.
Without a doubt the best set of irons I've ever owned.
