What a glorious weather we have had... but, I think I am starting to have a bit of withdrawal symptoms re the good ole English Summer staple i.e. the rains. While the Floridian weather is brilliant for BBQ and wearing shorts, it seems to have turned golf courses into dust bowls. Dont get me wrong, this has been great for driving, but plays chaos with the short game.
Yesterday, I hit a scorcher of a 290y monster on the 17th on Merrist Wood. The ball carried about 220-230 and then rolled the rest!!! Was grinning cheek to cheek so was quickly brought back to earth after the gentle 9 simply rolled over uncontrollably into the green side bunker to scramble and finish with a bogie.Couple of weeks ago, played Hampton Court and it was like playing on concrete fairways.
Another interesting thing to notice was that the only green bit on the fairway seem to exist in about 5m radius of sprinkler heads. The water hazards have been reduced to ditches. It shows how much golf courses depend on the weather and need more investments.
Interestingly played West Hill couple of weeks ago, the fairways were fine but a bit dusty nevertheless and the greens were fab. The weather is just showing the gap between the haves and have nots.
My ideal weather would like it to rain on week nights and then give us glorious sunshine on weekend. That way, the greenkeeper and the golfer is happy. (I think the govt should do something about it )
