Mismatching woods is detrimental to your golf. Discuss

I do prefer the uniformity of the shafts but I can see how many would keep an old faithful in the bags. If I ever go down the C/F route for my driver and fairways it'll be interesting to see what happens and if they got a matching set

Interesting point about manufacturers matching the shafts through their ranges of woods. Not quite sure that is the correct philosophy though. I want my driver to have a penetrating, lowish flight whereas I want to be able to hit my 3 wood with a bit of height off the deck so I can get it to stop on the green.

So, horses for courses which is why I don't have matching woods.
Absolutely this. I have not had matched driver/fairways in 20+ years. They are not as the OP described, there to complement each other (well they are, but only from the manufacturers standpoint of getting you to buy a set), they are there to do very different jobs.

Currently playing an i20 3 wood with ProjX6.0 shaft, which helps me get the ball up nice and high off the deck, something I have always struggled with.

My driver however is a Titleist, but I have been trying various i20 head/shaft combos. It is clear that if I did decide to match my driver/fairway heads, I would absolutely not be matching shafts, but going with the TFC stiff in a driver instead to get a better more penetrating flight, I simply hit the 6.0 too high, indeed a 9.5° head with the 6.0 shaft flies much higher than a 10.5° head with the TFC shaft.

So to summarise, no, mismatching woods are not detrimental to your golf, on the contrary, matching your woods for the sake of it, almost certainly is.

I don't think matching your the heads on your woods is a bad thing but the shafts have to do the job for that club. On my driver I want a more penetrating flight but on my 3 and 5 wood I want to get the ball up a bit higher.
Having had missmatched heads I have noticed the difference to having matched heads on my 3 and 5 wood. Now to find if I hit the matching driver as well and to find the right shaft for it.

Probably more important to get the shafts similar than the club/manufacturer.

Interesting ;) comments gents, especially those who have tried the matching driver to their 3 wood (or vice versa) and it just hasn't worked for them. Didn't really have an opinion on this, was just something that popped into my head when I was trying a range of different clubs on Sunday :)

Following on from thecraw's point above. For those who want a different ball flight for Driver vs Fairway Woods would a variation in shaft from the same manufacturer provide the desired affect whilst maintaining a degree of consistency? (Once again just a question I'm throwing out there ;) )

When I brought my 5 wood I found the Fubuki Shaft to be excellent and really seemed to suit me. I get the flight I'm after as well as the shape of shot so happy days.

When I went into the market for a hybrid, and subsequently driver, I noticed Mizunos' MP range had the same Fubuki shaft (Except for the MP-630 driver which also had a UST shaft as an additional option).

I get the flight I'm looking for and it's pretty consistant when I get on good swing on it and pretty forgiving when I dont.

Previously I had TM's original incarnation of Superfast woods. I had Driver, 3w, 5w and 3h. The one thing I wold say is that the Driver and woods had a Matrix Ozik shaft but the hybrid had their own Re-Ax shaft

I never understood that.

I don't think it's detrimental at all. I don't try to play the same type of shot with my driver and my 3 wood, so don't think matching the shaft is all that important.

I am a great believer in trying lots and finding what works, whether it matched or not.

My driver and 3 wood have the same shaft, and i mean the same. Not a 3 wood version .

I want to be able to hit my 3 wood low and run same as the driver.
do have a hybrid with a higher launch shaft but using a low run 2 iron at the moment.

only aproach shot that needs a high flight is the 13th and mine that plays 20 yards longer as uphill.

I've got the same aldila vs proto shaft in my Titleist driver and my g15 4 wood.
the driver wants to fade and the 4 wood always wants to draw.

I'm not quite sure what to make of that other than I've had both clubs quite a while so I know what I'm getting with them most of the time.

+1 for the folk who think shaft performance is more important than matching heads.

That's where most of the "feel" of swinging a club come from so it makes sense to give them broadly similar characterisits, IF you want similar performance from both clubs. As Murph said, there are those who would want their Driver and 3-wood to play quite differently.

I want a low penetraing flight with my driver, but like a high flying 3-wood as I've always struggled to get the desired height and carry hitting it off the deck
