Michael Clarke - sledging disgraceful comment

sledging as a name doesnt even make sense in the context its being used, anyone know its roots

It is a term originally coined by deported convicts, cultivated over the past 25 years. See also, Ute, Bludger, Galar, G'day and Cobber for further reference.

Problem though for England as the guys waiting in the wings are nowhere near ready for this sort of test. Barstow or Ballance? Prior needs to sort himself out too. Who are they going to fly out as cover?

You would hope they'd give Compton another chance really though not sure if he may have burnt his bridges with Flower. I expect Root moves up to 3? and they slot one of the Yorkies in at 6. Should always have cover for the top 3 on a tour like this and now that they have admitted Trott had ongoing problems, the initial tour selection has been exposed as poor for me. Basically they had 2 of the top 3 as vulnerable but didnt take any cover with them and instead will throw Root back in at the deep end rather than leaving him at 6

Shame about Trott....Bairstowe will probably get the nod as his form has been the better on the tour so far. In terms of cover ?? Well, next in line is probably James Taylor. Although, James Vince could be brought in.

Lots of people say the same about golf ;)

Cricket, unfortunately has gone the same was as football. The players cheat (from all countries) and try to get away with it. "Banter" as you call it is one thing, saying your going to break someone's arm, is hardly that. England are not innocent mind you. Im sure they give as good as they get. The class has unfortunately gone out of the game.

I disagree totally - Sledging has gone on for nearly as long as the game has existed. You could give countless examples of sledging at top level over the years. I have played for many years at various levels and even at Village level sledging is part of the game and adds to the spice. :) It comes in different shapes and sizes... A bit like Shane Warne!! :) The only difference nowadays is the cameras and stump mics etc pick it up more on TV ! The day you see a top level cricketer complain officially about it is the day something needs to be done perhaps..... Most of the time the comments are meant to get into the batsmans head but if it becomes racist or over the line personally then its normally dealt with straight away but that's v rare.
As its been said sledging has to be given on the basis its going to come back at you with some normally when your taking your guard!! To say sledging is "not cricket" is like saying its not a sport....I think the test game is in great shape and played by top athletes at a v competitive level much more so than ever before. Its an aggressive sport and sledging forms part of that.

The thing is Clark is either very brave or very stupid having a pop at Jimmy Anderson. If you're going to sledge do it to someone who doesn't bowl at nearly 90mph!

I think that was the point no England bowlers are or have been quick enough for Clarke to worry in his opinion. Accurate yes they can be but Andersen is not a quick aggressive bowler compared to Johnson. Hes more inclined to swing the ball rather than attack the body. I think we might see a real fight back with some proper aggressive bowling in the next test... We need that badly but more importantly the batters need to think a lot more on shot selection. Time to turn the tables on the gobby Aussies! :)

Sledging is part and parcel of Cricket, and most players accept it. Flintoff said recently that he would walk out to bat and expect it and felt that it would have effected him more had it just been quiet. Most take it as a complement that other professionals feel the need to try and put you out of your stride. There are guidelines and Clarke fell foul of these with his comments hence the fine. As to the England team, with Trott gone then Root will come up to 3, I don't personally think Carberry is England Class and our bowlers seem to have lost a yard of pace. Let's just see how they fair in the next Test 2 nil down and I think it will be a massive ask.

Best sledging is the mental stuff like when Robert Key went out to bat in Australia and Matthew Hayden walked up to him after he had taken guard and asked him "what are YOU doing out here with US?" ... apparently Gilchrist was laughing so hard he had to turn away behind the stumps.

This kind of stuff shouldn't bother us and in truth it probably doesn't. I always thought sport was about fighting hard but fair in the arena but then shaking hands and acting in a sportsman like way after the match, win or lose.
The Aussies will be hurting after the last series, so we might have to make allowances. But in the end you have to remember you are dealing with the Australian cricket team. They have no class. Never have had. Never will. They don't know the meaning of the word.

Sledging/banter/trash talking goes on in virtually every team sport that I`ve taken part in.....from school boy football (who hasn`t had a Dad shouting at the Ref/Opposition from the sidelines?) Sunday League Football, Ice Hockey, Cricket, Rugby and Matchplay Golf. It can take the form of some words or even gestures designed to get into your head and stop you concentrating on the game.
Once the opponent has seen he`s got to you, he`s halfway to winning, but, if you can give back as good if not better than you`ve received, then you`re halfway to winning.
The world of sports just wouldn`t be the same without it.

"Get ready for a broken arm!" - that's got to be one of the worst sledges EVER!! If I'd been Anderson, I'd have laughed.

Let's be honest, England were in a dire situation when Anderson walked out to bat. The Aussies knew that they were going to win and Anderson knew that he could have some fun and flash the blade. I bet the comment didn't even bother him.

I think this is the media trying to whip up more of a frenzy for SKY...

..

This has to be one of the most realistic comments on this thread

Don't think in serious golf competition I have ever sledged anyone. I have had it on the hockey pitch, but that is easily stopped with a bit of brutality ( all within the rules ... Nought wrong with a hard fair challenge). The gobby boys all ways go down like a sack of spuds, which is always funny, never comment, just smile and get on with it. I have ref'd university matches and stepped in when my fellow umpire was being harassed she was getting loads of stick, so I just sent the guy off. Their captain kicked off, so I asked him if he wanted to stand behind the goal and think about it. Honestly the refereeing is the key, you have to assert authority, look at rugby.
