Yes, I sort of agree but who draws those lines?
A good friend of mine, from over the bridge, once laid out flat an opponent then lectured him on the rights and wrongs of sledging [not that he heard]... "you can rip into me as much as you want but mention my family and you get walloped" was the gist...
just to be clear it goes on in every walk of life..............but it was never called sledging, is that just cricket?

So what is Sledging...?
If it is "heavy duty banter" designed to either intimidate or distract an opponent to make it easier to get them out then that is Ungentlemanly Conduct and has no place in Sport.
Threatening a broken arm, in jest or in anger, can only be construed as the above.....

The arm was an extreme example of Sledging.... But don't forget cricket it'sprobably the only non contact sport were u can legally try and put someone in hospital....
Sledging should not be removed from the game... There is nothing wrong with a bowler being on a hat trick and someone saying as the incoming batsman comes in.... Something like " send him back or he won't be here long..... Or just reminding the batsman how quick the bowler is and how much it's swinging.... Part of the game and accepted

Sledging - put the microphones up in volume. Ok, over 18's only, but interactive cricket with sledging thrown in. The telly figures would go through the roof.
When England won in 2005, the first test had lots of sledging and close-ish physical stand-tos. maybe the English have become too nice. Maybe we need our pride hurt.
I think the next one is going to be a cracker, especially if the Aussies are in first.

The thing is Clark is either very brave or very stupid having a pop at Jimmy Anderson. If you're going to sledge do it to someone who doesn't bowl at nearly 90mph!

He has been playing like a knob for a while so this deffo explains it. Nothing like him at all.
Before this he was solid as a rock, like having a road block batting. Shame for the guy as he was superb at times. Hope he gets back to his best and returns.

Problem though for England as the guys waiting in the wings are nowhere near ready for this sort of test. Barstow or Ballance? Prior needs to sort himself out too. Who are they going to fly out as cover?

Read all the reply's with interest , i believe and its clear there are different opinions on the subject of sledging .. as the match was virtualy done & dusted i dont understand the aggression in clarkes comments .. he would have been better served slagging JA rather than threatening him.. these cricketers along with other sports people have a responsability as role models to future generations who look up to them and strive to be like them ,
I believe he let himself down a bit , i do believe having played sport for years you can get caught up in the moment , but this is the equivalent of saying your going to break a players leg in the last min when your 10 nil up ..
On the flip side i believe the comments re Trott as part of the gamesmanship, Maybe i havent heard all the comments but its seems its about fear in his eyes and been afraid etc .. If Trott cant handle this then he shouldnt be on the tour in the first place , if the england camp were aware he was struggling with nerves or depression then they were neglegent [sp] in bringing him ..
Regarding what happens on the pitch stays on the pitch , fine if you want to play against me in a fair way be it football or cricket , bowl at my body , tackle me as hard as you want even slag my abilit or my guts for the game i will shake your hand .. threaten me ? ha dont offer me your hand unless your man enough to back up your words pal...
