Merrists Wood - anyone played there?

It's Merrist Wood (no s on Merrist). I haven't been there for a while. It was never my favourite place in the world but then I always played it in winter when it was invariably a bog so I'm not the best person to comment.

I've played it once and it was OK. Probably not the best of answers, but it depends what else is close to where you live and what fees they are charging

Only played it a couple of times, but seemed an 'entirely adequate' course. Does seem to be one that could get boggy in Winter though. Depending on you location, a couple of others to consider are Sutton Green and Pyrford. Again, both potentially affected by the sort of weather we've had this year and I have no idea about Subs. You may not be all that far from Camberley Heath, which would be a step up in quality imo - though probably quite a step up in fees too!

They have a £300 points scheme, which means I can get a handicap, play in comps & use those points across all the Crown Golf courses, so not just stuck to one place. Which suits me down to the ground!

I took the plunge last night to make the most of the off-seasons offers (which ended yesterday at 8pm!) - the course looked like it was in good condition - all greens in play & all tees in play from today.

Not only is it 10mins from my flat, but it also has a completely free to use driving range with grass bays, so that really swung it for me. Can't argue with free range practice!!

For £300 quid and all your getting even if the course is utterly crap its still worth it. Will save you some dough if you play a few opens with the hcap rather than paying a green fee just for starters.

Use to play it loads of times in 90s and 00s. Decent in the summer, a bog in winter. Don't know if its changed recently...also they used to have problems from the caravan/travellers park on a couple of holes (around the 12th?).

Only played there once. Course was lovely but vowed never to go back as the fairways seem more like semi rough and 5 hours rounds are the norm. Will be interested to hear if they've cut the fairways?

I think you must be referring to Freedom play DM. Check the small print because I'm not sure you can play other Crown Golf courses on that scheme (unlike full 5 or 7 day membership).

Not all courses, you're right, like Pine Ridge as it's just too busy to need the Freedom Play scheme.

I went round some of the holes yesterday, it all looks quite good, I'd seen online that people had said the fairways were a bit long but the course looked well kept and trim yesterday. Hoping to get out tomorrow afternoon & play so will be able to get a better idea from then. But if worse comes to worse, I'll use my points at Blue Mountain / Traditions / Pyrford / a few other courses around the area from Crown Golf so it's not at all bad value!

Unless it has changed a lot since I played there (a few times) don't bother with Traditions. Pyrford and Blue Mountains are worthwhile though.

Your welcome to come over to my place for a game. Shouldn't take too long and a decent course without the need to book tee times other than in comps and even then most medals/stablefords also have a roll up element. Got a feeling the joining fee is suspended at the moment too
