Mens wrist watches

The joy of having
Who says it needs a service? I have had several Rolex watches over the past 50 years and only had them serviced when they either stopped working or didn't keep good time.
The joy of having an omega moon watch is that it is mechanical. So when you wear it after a few weeks or months, it has stopped so requires the time setting and winding up. Not bothered about a service until it stops. 👍

Highly recommended on a Watch Forum I'm a member off.
Was about to post the same. I used Duncan for a specialist watch repair - he did a great job. The only downside is their turnaround is on a longer side.

For more current advice, TZ-UK is the forum to ask this question on.

Neil at chronomaster.co.uk might be worth contacting as well. He has a local trusted watchmaker he works with.

Went to a wedding a couple months ago, my mate who now lives in Switzerland was there, wearing a watch that cost over £30,000. He also has 3 other high value watches, couple of Rolexes (not the highest value he owns).

I honestly couldn't tell the difference between a £30,000 watch or a £500 one. All I can tell is that it us better than a Casio. Wasn't like it was encrusted with diamonds

Are you on TZ?
I'll have been a member for 15 years come January

What was the make? Generally, the price of a watch is driven by the “complications” it has, e.g. a perpetual calendar, a minute repeater etc + rarity (low production numbers). At higher prices it becomes a bit of an engineering art piece.

Of course, there are always some exceptions. 🙃

I think it was a Jaeger-Lecoultre

Oh my goodness. Would love a high end watch like an Omega, but that is ridiculous.
I've had my Seamaster for 10 years and it still keeps time fine. Services are recommended every ten (I think) years - but I probably won't get one done until it really needs it.

Also, as much as I love it, the longer I've owned it, the more I wish I'd got a Speedmaster as they definitely look more badass.

I'm after one of these but need some sort of occasion to make it justifiable to those who don't see the need for such extravagance...so maybe my 60th birthday in 2026....I guess I could sell the watch I bought for my 30th birthday to part pay for it....

or perhaps one of these...

Talking to a pal on the cruise last week, he had just bought a Rolex. He had the exact same wrist size as mine. It didn’t tick any boxes. His fave watch which I tried on weighed an absolute ton on my wrist. The name of which I have forgotten, will remember it later. His dad told him he wasted £4K on the Rolex as he has already told him that as he is the only child/son he will be leaving him £70K worth of watches and there’s a few Rolex’s in his collection.

Edit the big chunky watch was a breitling.

I’ve never seen the appeal of a Rolex. The worst of the high end Swiss makers in my opinion.

My dad has a few nice Swiss watches (Tag, Cartier, Raymond Weil and the like) which he will probably hand down to me, my sister and my kids (only grandchildren) but I’ll forever be an Omega guy.

I don't get the appeal of these expensive watches.

I'll stick to my Garmin, that tracks my steps, heart rate and sleep pattern. Oh, and it also tells the time with reasonable accuracy

I would have agreed with you before last week. Then I saw Garmins on sale for £800 😳

I dont see the appeal of a device that tells me my heart is beating, how far I've walked and how badly I've slept (mind you...I dont like wearing a watch to bed so that functionality would be useless to me anyway :D ).

We all want different things. Some people are happy to spend what others might consider silly money on said things. Its personal choice. A bit like choosing a Scotty Cameron over a Dunlop putter....or in my case, a Bettinardi :ROFLMAO:

The key point was, the watch was miles cheaper and it has all the optional extras, like being able to upload my runs to Strava (the only feature about from telling the time I actually use).

Having a mega expensive watch that just tells the time seems pointless. I'd want it to hit 350 yard drives for me for that kind of money. I'd also be scared to death if I had a expensive watch, in case I lost it or got mugged

Thanks, I will check out Genesis, price is half the Omega price.

It’s an automatic seamaster chronograph and the mechanism is not storing energy properly any more.

Do you take your golf bag in the cubicle in the gents, or would no one nick your clubs 🤣

The ones who 'don't see the point' of a mechanical watch never will, so that's not worth the debate.

Buying an expensive watch goes beyond simply "what it does". If it was about simply telling the time we would all be wearing cheap Casio's or Limit's brought from Argos.
