Our greenstaff were working yesterday putting in new drainage gullies on our 11th fairway in and around 160 yds from the green.
Hole reduced to a par 3 for the weekend--notice in clubhouse confirming change.
Today the group behind started playing off the normal tee, we tried to explain to them the changes and we were told "we are not in the competition". Very annoying when members ignore local rules imposed for the benefit of the members.

What difference does being in a comp make. If the hole is reduced to a par 3 for the weekend for the work to be carried out then surely its a par 3 for everyone regardless of competition play or not

I would have to see the actual rule change to make an imnformed comment, I have seen such rules or similar only apply to those in competition during the period of change before and I have also seen blanket rules applying to all. So without seeing the rule I could'nt say who was the naughty person or persons here.

Does seem a little silly in this case though.

Talking of local rules, we have a reachable par 4 and a 230 par 3 that have local rules in place stating you must mark up and allow following group to tee off before you putt out.

The par 4 is more for safety than pace of play because the next tee is right smack bang in slicers bullseye.

There is a huge sign on the tee and almost everyone ignores it.

Last week we had a fourball of seniors infront who wouldn't let us play through and refused to mark up and let us tee off. My playing partner approached them and asked them why they didn't let us and they responded with 'are you both members'? He told them we were but asked why that even mattered and the response was ' you shouldn't even be out because the seniors have the tee booked' Again my partner infromed them the pro let us go out as the last of the seniors had gone (the group arguing).

Fresh out of excuses they said we didn't think you would reach anyway and when my oppo pointed out my ball at the back of the green and his 10 yards from the next tee they just stood with blank looks.

So annoying when people ignore the rules, especially when its for there own safety.

I too have played at clubs where this rule is in force and I believe works really well for pace of play.......until...along come those who dont read or couldnt care less. :D

I totally agree, Homer - I'd give 'em a bollocking personally.

We changed one of our holes to a call down. Lasted 2 weeks before health and safety made us change it back. Too dangerous to have golfers standing about waiting within range of the tee. They might get hit. I didn't find it that easy to see the incoming balls tbh, and can see the problem.

It didn't do much for pace of play either.

In this instance it seems pointless, But with ours, they have to walk back from the 8th green to the 9th tee, Which is just to the right of the 8th fairway at about 200-220 yards. Its much safer standing behind the 8th green at about 260.

If he can take 4 Pro V1's down his throat he's wasted as a greenkeeper!

I can see their point if they weren't in the competition....

What about Health and Safety. What would have happened if 4 PRO V1's had gone down the Greenkeepers Throat?

Now having read the OP properly I withdraw my previous comments - I couldn't for the life of me originally see why greenstaff would be working on a Saturday, particularly in Ireland.....if the greenstaff were there then very bad form but if it was just to stop people losing their balls in the works then crack on...
