Member of 2 clubs

County membership is only £80 at my away course, variety is the reason I like 2 courses.

Bit unfair you have to pay SGU their fees on second course as well.

I too am a member of two clubs, Blairgowrie and Leven Links. A long time member at Blairgowrie, I joined Leven a few years ago as it is relatively frost free and less likely to be closed in winter as it is links. Exceptional value for money, Leven was a six times qualifier for the Open, and is one of the friendliest clubs I have been a member of. A bit further for me to travel to from home, but well worth the effort.

Just wondering how many people here are members of 2 clubs?
And what were your reasons for this?
I presume the main advantage is the variety it brings by being able to experience a different course when you feel like it.
I'm a member of 3 clubs.

1. Is a short 9 hole course about 1km from my house. I play it with a mate at Sun up on Mondays and Fridays. We are always the first off and sometimes play the first hole in the dark (110mtr par 3) and by the time we walk under a freeway to the 2nd (par 4) you can see the ball. ($595 yr unlimited golf 7 days a week, no range)

2. Is another 9 hold course thats about 3km from my house. I usually play Wednesday morning 9 hole comp here but the value is that it has an outdoor range with unlimited ball. Chipping area and also 3 putting greens. I go several nights a week after 7pm and will hit about 30 off the range and then wedge shots at the chipping area for the other 30. Sometimes I pick them up and hit more, other times I walk away and leave them for someone else. ($295 for 3 months unlimited golf and balls)

3. Is a mint 18 hole course. 12km from my house. Stuffy members and rich old retired people. My daughter (13) is also a 7 day member here and will play after school most afternoons. This is where I play my "Real golf" Bunkers, water, fantastic layout and green so tough I sometimes question if I should give up golf. I play here every Tuesday night (9 holes) and 18 hole comp Thursday afternoons, and always 18 on a Sunday. I go other afternoons as after 3pm there is rarely anyone out on course as its pretty private and I would say that over 60% are retired and play mornings and during the day and finished and drunk by 3pm. ($3200 a year unlimited golf but no range)

I dont play Saturdays. Well I rarely do but if I do I will go to some of the good Sandbelt course and play there or down the coast. Royal melb, Metro, St Andrews Beach, The dunes etc....

The youth is a member at 3.
His membership at Willow Valley is free with mine until he’s 18 - although he won’t play there much through winter.
He’s a member at Dewsbury District as it’s 2 minutes away - he can walk up through a bridleway in less than ten minutes, and it’s only £30 a year for his junior membership.
His home club is Huddersfield, he joined there last year for multiple reasons. He gets free range balls, great practice facilities and they do some great things with the juniors. It’s in the top ten courses in Yorkshire - so at £130 for his membership last year - it’s great value.

Would you say Leven is better than Lundin?

Tue 9 holes evening
Wed 9 holes am
Thu 18 holes pm
Fri 9 holes am
Sat ocasional 18 holes on a sandbelt course
Sun 18 holes

+ afternoon rounds on your main course
+ evening practice on your second course several nights a week

I took my 10 year old out with me this morning and enquired about getting him a membership for golf South Ayrshire it’s £3.50 a year lol unbelievable value I was shocked I asked again in case I misheard the guy.

So good.
So many clubs nowadays with free junior membership when taking out or renewing an adult too. Great to see.

I'm seriously considering joining a 2nd club in April as a flexible member.
My local course (5 mins away) is OK, but a bit of a bog in winter + tbh the greens are nothing special, there are times when they have opens or societies its not possible to play, so a 2nd course is starting to make sense.
It's a 30 min drive away.
A lovely course & will provide me with an alternative option

Would you say Leven is better than Lundin?
In what way?

As a member at Blairgowrie I have a reciprocal with Lundin and I also know a few members, so have had the opportunity to play it many times. The course is really good and always presented in great condition, apart from the holes to the north of the old railway line which are just not "links" in my opinion. The clubhouse is top quality, as is the pro shop, and the practice facilities are great.

Leven Links, to me, is more of a traditional Links and has the better layout of the two, with split fairways and a fantastic finishing hole. The greens are excellent and bunkers can be penal. There are two clubs at Leven, Leven Golfing Society (Which I am a member of) and Leven Thistle Golf Club, both of which, in my opinion, are more down to earth and friendlier than Lundin Links which is more "elite".

Membership costs are also a consideration. Currently, Lundin is £796 a year plus a £1035 joining fee and no apparent discount for senior or country membership. There also appears to be a short waiting list for membership. Leven Golfing Society is £690 for full membership or £552 for senior/country membership, which is what I fall into, and no waiting list.

Both the courses I'm at have reciprocals that we can go to when there are Opens etc. Have you checked to see if your club has this?.....although I've heard some clubs don't have this. The club here in town I am at has a LOT of Opens, business days, tourneys, blah-blah-blah that knock us off the course. I'd be really ticked off if I had to pay to play somewhere else.

Yes, we do have a reciprocal scheme that was once good value.
But now, the price has risen year on year.
Now, it's not really any cheaper than the county card.
We only have one free reciprocal which is not within realistic travel distance.
It's pretty poor really
My home course does book in quite a few societies & tbh, if the course wasn't so close by, I'd probably choose to play elsewhere.

Thanks, just generally curious as most that I’ve spoke to have always said Leven and I know Lundin is ranked a little higher in the top100.
Leven seems great value for £££

A 2 hour drive just to play golf???....no thanks. I'd rather do yard work.
You don't want to know distances I've driven, or flown, for a single round of golf...and Saunton has golf I'd drive for.
Funny you mention Fraserburgh here too, it’s probably the cheapest I’ve seen from the top courses country membership wise, £270.
Murcar £350
As an American these membership prices seem impossible. I tell people my lifetime memberships in the UK/Ireland are less than annual dues at my clubs in the US. I'm convinced my friends don't believe me.

A US based golf forum I frequent has a thread asking for advice on finding a second club away from home titled "National membership - $100k budget." It's absurd...

Me too. We spent all day on the road and drove to Inverness last year🤣🤣 Heading back to Machrie and Macrihanish this summer, will take in several courses en route.

Saunton is easy. Let me know next time you're over here!😉
