Hello Guys
i'm currently back playing golf regular with my 20 year old ping zing irons,
with which i am doing ok,
however my distance is very poor
and playing with others who are hitting 9irons when i'm hitting 6/7 is getting on me.
is this me or is it just that technology has moved on so much in 20 years that clubs now do go further !

At a guess its you.... but it may be that the loft of your buddies 9 iron is the same as your 7 iron.

Edit so not really you based on what I said....

I've not read the post, just the title, and I'm going to say 'it's you' mainly because if I was asking the same question, it would be me, but when you say me, I me you, not me, similarly when you say you, you mean, me, not you as that would just be silly.

But with a serious reply, I was in the same boat, when I started playing again. I was using some old irons and the lofts had changed that much, that when the club pro tried my 7 he was only getting it as far as his 9, with a real proper full thwack.

So in part it'll be down to you getting you technique and swing back, in the other it will be down to the older club loft and possibly worn out shafts.

See if you can try a couple of clubs at a local range, some with attached shops let you hit a few balls with test clubs.

Can see where this will end up - hit a few Cobra Amp, Ping G25s or TM, hit the ball further and home with new set of shineys in the boot.

I'd say it was a bit of both.

You are probably rather less 'athletic' than you were in those days, so a 1-club loss of distance wouldn't be unexpected.

Ping Zings did go relatively miles - but that was in comparison with/to the likes of old style blades. I hit a Ping Eye 1-iron yesterday and (counting the distance it bounced back off the tree!) it went almost as far as a 3-wood.

Callaway added forgiveness and some more distance with their Big Bertha and X-series irons. Up to a couple of years ago, that was it, but (probably from Burners on) there has been significant advances in distances irons go now.

The only thing that defines particular irons is their weight - a 7-iron is 270gm +/- 1 or 2 - so changing weight distribution and loft of the head and length of the shaft has meant that there is about 2 clubs of extra distance over clubs of the Zing's era.

Once you decide that your return to golf is 'permanent', I'd suggest you look at either the online golf stores for previous year 'bargains' or Ebay (and maybe Golfbidder) for slightly older but still solid second hand irons (MX25 or 23 are my usual recommendations).

guys i never went away from game just now playing week in week out,
became a member 8 months ago and down to 14 hcp already.
do i need cavity back or blades do we now think ?

Lots of 'new-boy' questions in your earlier posts.

Have you heard of 'Troll'? Apparently they make some pretty good wind-up blades!

Got to be you. when i first startedf i had an old set of hippos, upgraded to g20 irons and i played even worse. and ive got amate who started playing the same time as me, we are the same build, and he easily gets20-30 yds more on each club than me, no matter what i try. Luckily im a far more superior chipper/putter ;)
