Me again:o McAfee is installed on new PC. Can't access the internet using Google Chrome (get message connection not private) or get onto Twitter. Will it be McAffee causing this. Do I uninstall and get Avast that I used to use.

Thanks

The chances are that you have a 30 day trial version of McAfee , so you'd prob be best uninstalling. Do that first, but once the Internet is working , download avast first before you do anything else.

Chances are that it isn't McAfee causing the Internet issue.
Open control panel, Internet options, advanced, reset
Tick the box for everything and reset ie back to defaults
Open Internet explorer, does it work?
If so try chrome, if that works
Do avast
If not post back

Ok, think I've done it right. IE works but still getting the same message for Chrome. Can't get on Twitter with IE. BTW, posting on the new pc using IE.

Sorry about this:o

Chellie.

I had a similar experience when this Laptop's power connector came away from the board and I used a previous, very, very slow, backup machine. It's Chrome that traps what it thinks is the lack of secure connection. As it was my banking access that triggered it, I needed a way round it (or Twitter but I don't really use that), so set a switch on another piece of downloadable software (Fiddler2) to trick Chrome. I don't believe it's McAfee causing it, but Avast works better anyway (imo) so worth ditching - and Avast is free. I never did truly solve the issue but thought it was speed related, as I haven't had it since returning to my 'main' laptop which is slower than your new PC.

As you also have a huge amount of space/performance available, it could also be worth downloading Firefox and trying that. I didn't try that (not enough space) but got an equivalent error with Internet Explorer though so Firefox may also do the equivalent. Chrome seems to be getting a bit fat these days, something I dislike.

You can set Firefox up pretty much the same as Chrome pretty easily.

Thanks Foxholer. Am also getting security error for youtube through IE. Just tried watching the vids that Liverbirdie has posted.
Am loathe to download another browser as yet.:o

Don't know if it helps but on the GM twitter if I scroll way down the page I can see @GolfMonthly is blocked. This is part of what it looks like when I've tried twitter on here and our clubs one.

Thanks. They're right.

It's doing my head in.........

When you get the error message there should be an "advanced" link on the page which expands the full error - can you cut and paste that message or put the last line part of it on here? Should be a NET:ERR_........ something - it tells you what the error is

Reluctance to download/use another browser is quite reasonable - especially as it might not 'fix' the problem anyway!

How are you getting access to Twitter to show those settings? Old/HID's PC? If that's the case, then the Fiddler option might be 'best', at least in the short term. Google Fiddler2 and download it, fire it up and in the 'Tools' selection list pick 'Fiddler Options', then HTPPS and make sure the 'Capture HTPPS' box is ticked. I'm pretty sure (from memory) that's the flag that's needed, but if it's not, shout and I will dig a bit deeper - it's on t'internet somewhere!

There's 1 small caveat with using this method...You may need to reset the Proxy Server off if Chrome crashes and Fiddler isn't running. The message from Chrome will be something like 'Cannot find Proxy Server'. You can sort it out by selecting the 'Customize Chrome' icon (the 3 bars just under the Close Button on top right), Select 'Settings', go to bottom and 'Show Advance Settings' then 'Change Proxy Settings' (I use Find/F3 of 'Prox') to show that), Select 'Change Lan Settings' and turn 'Use Proxy Server' off (no tick), then Click OK where requested (twice) and all should be fine. If you load Fiddler as part of startup, have it running all the time or fire it up when you get that message, that process is probably not needed. I only loaded Fiddler when I needed it - which was for my internet banking.

Btw. If you go the Fiddler way, it might pay to cut/paste this post into somewhere you can access it without internet access - as if you need to use the 'reset proxy' option, you won't have internet access to read this post. Actually I hope you never need to use it anyway!

Well, this is really wierd but I'm now posting using Chrome and can view twitter. Fingers crossed it continues.

Thanks again everyone:)

more than likely windows downloaded some updates automatically, which included some bug fixes which allow you to now access HTTPS sites

Have you got Avast on yet?

Hi Phil, downloaded Avast, disconnected from the internet then uninstalled McAfee, installed Avast and then got back on the net.

The first thing I do with any new PC is install the OS fresh onto a formatted hard drive...

I always ensure I have a drive with the drivers on ready to go too, most important is the LAN or wireless driver.

If you are confident enough with PCs just wipe it and start from scratch, if you have any important files, back those up first of course!
