Matchplay on temps?

Last weekend our 2nd round matchplay game was cancelled due to rain.
At this moment it has been rearranged for this weekend.
I rang the club today and they are on temps[all 18].
There is a chance that the match will be on temps[the club says].
Sorry just to say its not my course were playing away.
Its a running comp over a couple of months,so it has to be played sometime,however
I don't really want to play on temps.
What are your thoughts,ta
 
Some interclub comps have a limit on the number of temps you can have for the match to be valid, it might be worth checking the rules.
 
Our Winter League games are often played on temps, it's not great but what else can you do on Leicestershire clay?

In my experience it favours the higher handicaps as the temps are smaller and so harder to find for both high and low, they're usually closer than the main green, bringing them into range for the shorter hitter, and the surfaces are poorer so negating the lower handicaps greater (usually!) putting prowess.
 
We've had an email from our club about our winter knockout competition. Apparently games must be played unless course is closed and it doesn't matter if the course is a short course.

At the moment our course is a 9 hole par 3, so I guess we are playing pitch and putt..

Not my idea of a knockout but hey ho... Might just ask for a coin toss to save getting out of bed.
 
If it is played on temps what is the situation with handicaps? Does it get reduced to half the difference rather than 3 quarters or full difference?

I played with a Sunday roll up group last year that were all 3 handicap or lower and half of them were scratch, when ever it was on Temps it was half handicap
 
I wouldnt even play a bounce game on temps- total lottery and not the course the way it should be- I would cancel and if the others did the organisers should re-arrange until its a normal course.
 
If its a winter comp, you just gotta suck it up.

Played mine just before Xmas with 8 temps, fortunately was only giving 6 shots away.

Don't see what the issue is, it's hardly The Open!!

Read my op,no mention of there being an issue.
Temps are just crap normally.
As you say suck it up,no problem.
Interesting point about changing it to half handicap,i suppose I will just wait and see.
No guarantee it is on temps,its just the course is on temps atm.

I don't think it does.
Where on a long par five a shorter hitter might not be able to reach in 2,now the holes
shorter he can.
A longer hitter will still reach in 2,going into the temp green with a shorter iron but its pot luck
on the reaction of the ball,however now its down to putting on a rubbish surfice.
When giving shots away,very different.

Those shorter hitters won't be able to reach the par 4s that are now driveable for a longer hitter

The low guy should be able to hit it closer more often

But more seriously, how much shorter are the holes, really? Ours are always on the front fringe so holes are only ever half a green shorter. And although they are not perfect, they are better than many a green I've played on.
 
In our winter league any temps are much smaller than our, quite small, main greens. I usually suggest before we start that we be sensible over gimmee's on temps. Yes they are slighty nearer but I really don't see the high handicap argument. Lower handicappers will generally be more accurate and be much closer and hitting shorter clubs in, this will negate the potential advantage higher handicappers will have off the tee.

It's not often fun playing temps but it is a winter comp and if you sign up for it you know you're going to play in wet, cold, frosty,boggy, frozen conditions and the most adaptable players will cope. It, also, still gives a competitive edge to winter golf.

When we go to temps, they are all 15yds minimum (apart from 16th) short of the green. If you put temps near the fringe, doesn't it defeat the object of keeping folk away from the green and approaches whilst they recover from the weather condition?

As you see I was very careful not to make it high v low handicaps.
That's not what its about at all.
