Matchplay advice

Wow what a match!

I could write a book on that one!

Firstly the fella was a decent sort! Only young and obviously a good player!

Halved the first couple with a double and a bogie!
Lost the 3 rd as I went out of bounds!

Won it back on the 5th with a bogie!
Went one up when he messed up the 7th and I bogied...
halved the 8th when I didn't have a shot!
Lost the 9th after hacking my way through the trees, so all square at the turn.

So I am getting more and more confident.

I went one up on the 11th with a bogie then a couple of worldly recovery shots on 12 and 13 to halve both, really knocked the stuffing out of him! The one on the 13th had him shaking his head! Par 3 with a ditch at the front, my tee shot comes to rest on the down slope of the ditch on the wrong side up against the little bridge! I have two bunkers to get over and not much green! I open up the 58* and clear the bunkers and hold it on the green! I couldn't do that again if I tried 100 times!

Halves up to the 16th where I messed up and he parred to win, all square again!

All square on the par 5 18th, he birdies and I par with another worldly 3rd shot from the rough with a hybrid to the middle of the green!

I then lip out to win on the first extra! I then duff a chip which ends up halving the 2nd!

The 3rd again, he drives about 300 yards and I dump mine in the pond! I end up with a six and he messes up to bogie and half!

It's now nearly dark and he messes up his approach to the 4th and I mishit my 2nd skipping over a ditch onto the green leaving me two puts to win!!,

Which I'd did!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for going on and on but the wife wasn't interested and I'm on the train most of the day tomorrow so I can't tell anyone else about it!!!!

The fella was a young gent and was obviously gutted but he did say he had never been in a match like that before!!

I'll bet he hasn't:whistle: and neither have you- well done 100% matchplay record:thup:

Well done Jack, I won a match on the 4th extra play off too and it's a fantastic feeling but a long walk back to the clubhouse for the loser, you'd be drained after it! Seems like you've seen quite a lot in your first run out, there's plenty more can happen though, let us know how round 2 goes (you will find a silly number of us LOVE to read these match reports, you did it right, never give away the ending cos I for one felt like I was playing in your shoes) :)

Playing my first ever singles matchplay tonight!!

Could be interesting, playing a long standing member who plays off 7 and got to the final last year.

I'm obviously receiving plenty of shots, but just wondered if there any tips, or advice from the great and the good of GM forum to help me on my way.

MY plan is to half a couple to get it past the 10th....

My advice go for everything, if you are 200yards out in deep rough, 3 wood, tight driving hole, get the big dog out. 150 yard par 3.. hard 9 iron..

in case you hadn't guessed im rooting for the 7 handicap;)

The fact it went to a 4th playoff hole suggests the handicap of both players was a fair representation of their abilities and made for a nice level match

fantastic, enjoyed reading that. Felt like I was with ya getting tense on a few! well done pal awesome stuff

Had a similar high drama unbelievable match, lip outs, impossible recovery's, comebacks, bombs, duffs, chip ins, monster putts, gimme misses, cart pathing, terrible bounces, great bounces, even a skipping water shot!, all with the the father in law as well so one to talk about for a long time... my Mrs wasn't interested in the slightest either ITS NEVER OVER TILL ITS OVER! ahhhhh It's why I love this game. Well done again buddy

Well done Jack

Was other way round for me tonight, had to give 13 shots away to an improving young 17 year old.

Lost the first but won second then went to 3 up by the 7th and then for great fight back from him to be all square after 14.
Won 15 then two halves and won the 18th Phew....

..and don't concede a hole until your opponent is on the green unless your continuing to play a disastrous hole would be detrimental to your game and mindset.

Cracking stuff Jack. A great account. Slightly off topic, but just wanted to bring to the Matchplay topic that the Volvo World Match Play Championship returns to England this year. Naturally it's spiritual home was Wentworth, but the European Tour are running the event this year at the London Golf Club. I have never been to a Matchplay tournament previously and I'm really looking forward to following a few matched closely and seeing how the some of the world's best golfers tactically play the purest from of the game. Being played in mid October.
