Matching SandWedges

Hi all, first time poster, although i have been reading the forum for months.

Just wondering what people think of the SW that came with there iron set. I bought a set of Callaway X22's and just cant seem to get used to the SW out of bunkers. Feel its more an approach club than anything else. I have a 56degree MD wedge which is great out the sand. Thinking of swapping back to it.

Just wondering what peoples opinions are on them.

The Missus has got it in her bag. Specialist wedges all the way for me as it gives me 3 options inside a PW. If I kept the SW in the set I would have a PW then a different GW then the SW then a different LW. I'd just rather keep to all the same, better spin and feel too.

Very few sets that I have ever tried out had a decent wedge, I suppose it certainly keeps the performance wedge makers in nice cars.

Personally, it's nice to have a mixture. Let's say, turkey and stuffing with a bit of cranberry and a pate' and pickle.

I'd buy different wedges (at least 2 different lofts), they are your 'surgeons tools'.

i now use the sw of my set (burner plus) but have never used the ones on the other i had previously. not sure why realy guess its just down to how you feel about each club but do have another 2 wedges in the bag (gap 50 and lob 60)

Seriously though. I never got on with the set SW of my previous set of irons. Consequently I've stopped at the PW with the current irons, and have specialist GW, SW and LW. It's a personal choice though.

But what is noticable is that the more 'player' orientated the iron sets become. The less chance there is of them including an SW. Well with the Mizzys anyway.

Never liked any of the sand wedges on offer with any set so only ever buy 4-PW. I have a 52 and 58 I tend to use regularly but can drop one of my woods and go 52, 56 and 60 if I need to.

I like my wedges to be the same make and model as I just think it makes consistancy easier

I've used the SW from my set of X-18s and it's rather good out of sand. It's also rather good out of fluffy lies just off the fairway. Around the green it's a disaster. Sticking with my Vokey all the way.
I've also binned the PW and am using the one from my Mizuno set. Tomorrow, I expect the 9 iron to go the same way. Then the 8 in all likelihood.

I ditched the Sand Wedge out of my set a few months ago. It was great for short approach shots ut ironically could not get a ball out of the sand with it so used my gap wedge or lob wedge instead. Changed it for a CG14 and would not go back. PW is now the only wedge in my bag from the original set and as the loft is more like a 9 iron I keep it in for approach shots and chipping.

Dave I have owned x-12s and x-16s and found the wedges to be way too chunky, I prefer surgical looking sharp wedges (MD low bounce etc), they dont tend to go as far as the callys etc but by hell they stop.

Really interesting thread, I was just thinking about this yesterday.
I just cant get out of the sand with the sw that came with the set, I use my lob wedge and assumed I just have a suspect technique.
I do have a lot of success with it from around the green though.

Back in the day when I was a wipper-snapper, I always used the SW that came with whatever beat up clubs I could afford, and I don't even remember seeing gap wedges or lob wedges.

With the clubs I have now though I didn't get offered a SW with the irons, just 3-PW, and I bought wedges separately.

Maybe im just hitting it wrong from the bunker but i used to open up my MD 56 wedge a bit and the ball would pop out no probs, although they def dont go as far as the x22's of similar loft.

I currently use a Ping Tour-W sand wedge because Ping don't make an i15 one. I also had a Tour-W gap wedge but replaced this with the i15 one as soon as they bought it out.
If they bring out a dedicated i15 SW I will get that as well.
Much prefer it if all of my clubs match.

My dci's (old ones) were then only clubs to come with a decent sand wedge. Every other set i have tried or play with the sand wedge just seems an underpowered PW. Specialist wedges all the way.
