we play a monthlyso called friendly home and away fourball match with two pals from a different club, we always play £ 1 the front nine £ 1 the.backnine £ 1 overall £3 total.

At last game at my home course, when we arrived there was a visiting party waiting. so we decided to start at the 16th which is only a100yrds away, .
the 16th was halved . . one of our opponents birdied 17 and 18, so they are 2 up. we then started at first, all holes were then halved up till the 9th till my mate holed a zonker 30footer to win the 9th ...
.. in your opinions at that point, what was the match play score standing on the 10th tee.

good friendships at stake

you were one down with 6 to play (10-15)... werent you ?

your front was then 16-6th so ye lost the front 9 2down

currently you were one up for the back 9 on the 10th tee ..

I see your dilemma & the confusion, to me 1st 9 played 16-6 would be front 9 , surely good friendships not at stake over £1 tho ... Call it a draw and play £2 £2 & £2 next outing

thanks ,were still all pals. as nothing was said after the 6th hole about winning the front 9 , three of us thought we had won the front 9 , and were 2 down on the back, 1 down overall, 3 of us agreed and we gave them £1 each. play again on wednesday . ref required.

If not starting on the first, then we'd always regard the "front nine" to the be the first nine holes played and "back nine" to be the second nine played. Can't see why one would do differently?

I was always told that the front nine is the actual front nine as per the card. If you played a shotgun com for example and had started on 16 and the scores were tied, countback would have been done on the back 9 according to the card.

As I see it you lost the back 9 two down and won the front nine one up to lose one down overall

easy one - everyone is disqualified under Rule 1-3 for excluding the operation of Rule 2-1 by failing to play the stipulated round ie the 18 holes in their correct sequence.....unless you had a ruling from the committee changing the stipulated round.

or just sort it out before you get going as Scienceboy points out!

I agree for official comps ie like shotguns, for casual rounds/games like that where its just one group there is argument for both ways of playing. Meaning its all the more important to agree before teeing off, even if its the above way every time. At least all know as they march down the fairway!

1. Not worth destroying friendships for the sake of a couple of quid - or is that all they are relly worth!

2. Unless you set out the rules/parameters at the start, then either approach is valid/arguable, so only overall match score is prosecutable.
