I think it's where they held the final of the trilby tour (only watched it the other day so I should be more certain of this??) if you can get to see any footage, may give you an idea of what to expect

It's a good course but not worth the drive of 6 hours unless you plan to play Celtic Manor also
If you were travelling that far I'd definitely look at another place to play to make it worth the petrol money. Not worth going just to play St Pierre

I remember in the late 70's going down to watch one of the Pro events there. Langer won from memory. Course was highly rated, but over the following years the course did seem to go downhill, and when I played there in the 90's was not in great condition. Hopefully it has improved as there were some good holes, and the 18th is a beast of a par 3.
