Marks left by your balls?

Very funny title!

Serious question though:

I've seen on some of the pro clubs a really obvious damage mark on the sweet spot where they strike the ball repeatedly.

I'm really confused though, because on all my clubs the scratch marks are so low down - almost on the base of the club-face.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I don't thin my shots, but I would have expected the impact marks to be much higher up.

I probably use my eigt iron the most, and even with my limited abilities and time to play, am begging to see a bit of a mark on the far. Although with the rest of the clubs the mark is developing near (on) the hosel!

As murph says you probably need to take more of a divot so as to be hitting "down" on the ball more

I would suggest that the marks left on tour pros clubs are as a result of the ball regularly connecting in the same place on the face and the fact that their clubs are (likely to be) forged. I doubt that cast clubs would leave this mark.

So if your clubs are cast, I would think that the marks are from stones etc and therefore would appear on the bottom of the club face.

I played against a chap (+2capper) at our club and had a close look at his kit. He played mizuno blades and the sweet spots were beaten to death. Never seen anything like it, the rest of the face was pristine but the middle looked like someone had taken a grinder to it.
Awesome to watch him play, never missed a fairway and every putt was for a birdie, i had 8 shots and he humped me 6&5.

I have ball prints on the toes of my clubs. Very annoying :(
