More skycaddie questions :D

I'm playing a course that I play quite a bit tomorrow morning. Unfortunately it's not been mapped in SkyCaddie yet so was thinking of mapping the greens as I go round with my SG 2.5.

Looks pretty simple, and gave it a quick go in the garden.

Anyone tried this during a round ? Will it slow things down much ? Obviously I don't want to slow play up at all.

I'm playing by myself, have a really early tee time and I play pretty quickly as well. So think I can 'open up a lead' on the players behind me to not slow them down.

Or should I just wander round late afternoon when the course is quiet ?

Thanks

I have just done the same thing, mapping out our 9 hole.

Very easy to do, and the only bit that takes a little time is the greens. Your mark the front of the green, press and hold for 5 sec, then walk to the back and do the same hold for 5 sec, and then using the sky caddie walk to the centre of the green, you will know when you are there, as the front and back marks (yards) should read the same, and for the last time press and hold for 5 sec.

Then off to the next hole!!

I was planning on doing our local 9 holer. Good thing is, once you have mapped the course you can upload it to the SC website and share it with everyone else.

I did it once during a round. As said above, it's simple enough but I found that you were chasing about a bit to do the front/back/middle whilst at same time trying not get in way of, nor to slow down, the people I was playing with (and to give them the courtesy of not running about whilst they were putting etc).

I don't think I'll bother during a round again. Much better to walk the course to do it - esp if it's somewhere you play regular. Or, you can bung in a request to Skycaddie to have the course mapped - don't know how long it takes but mapped courses seem to be building up reasonably quick. (the course I did appeared in their list before I was able to use the mapping I'd done - doh)

The best thing to do is to contact SC directly who will arrange for your course to be mapped subject to your club letting them onto the course to do so. They have normally done it within 4-6 weeks. Speak to your secretary and explain it isn't listed and make there is no issue and get in touch. That way you will know in a few weeks how accurate you were and have the proper measurements to boot

Mapped it this morning, just got back. I was first out at 8am so didn't slow anyone up.

Was pretty easy as said.

I've also logged a request with skycaddie as well for them to map it, so I can get all the hazards etc.

That was the only good thing to come of the round though, had a mare. Again.

Greens were rock hard frozen, bombed an 8 iron onto the 1st green only to see it bounce about 10ft in the air and over the back. Arghh.

Well at least I have it mapped for Friday's round :D

guys with a GPS/sky caddie it works by giving your current location and then calculating the distance to marked points - e.g front of green etc.
does this work in reverse to give you distances FROM the tee as well? e.g. yellow tee to current location = ??

cos if it does i'd love to know how far i'm hitting from the tee as well as how far i've got to go!

You can mark the point you hit from and then mark the point when you get to the ball - it will tell you the distance between the 2 points and therefore how far you have hit it....

Been out today and used the SC to give me how far short of the main greens the temporaries are. Mostly they are 30 or 35 yards short of the centres although the par 3's are all completely different. Very useful info which saves you having to guess the yardage (I for one don't think that guessing distances is a virtue) and not something you will get on a course planner. All you have to do then is choose the correct club, hit the ball in the right direction and watch it plug, bounce another 50 yds, or whatever.
