I was given a wee dram bottle of the Glendronach 14 year old virgin Oak as a gift of HID this year.

Put simply it was the nicest Whisky i have ever had. Was smooooooooooth as silk and the lingering taste in my mouth was bliss. It came in set of some silly priced Balvenie No2 and another i forget.

The Glendronach was just outstanding
I agree. See post #26

will definitly look you up if ever in your neck of the woods.

Earlier this week, realised i had no whiskey at home.. so just bought an 18 Glenfiddich (love it). But also, got adventurous and got a Japanese Hibiki.. both of them around the £55 mark each.. No money left for any ice..

So experts, i need to get my grandad a bottle, my mum suggested famous grouse, but wanted something a bit less high street.. Any suggestions based on him liking grouse and not to break the bank!?

Recently drank a Glenlivet Founders Reserve which was really good. Quite young by all accounts but very easy to drink - loved and loathed by the critics in equal measure. Was supposed to be my Christmas stock for everyone but a couple of 'taster' sessions with some friends put paid to that... Great value malt.

'Restocked' with the Glenfiddich IPA which is delicious and in danger of being locked away until the holidays begin [some hope].

Aldi are doing some really nice single malts below the £30 price point. I can't remember the name off the top of my head, but if you have a local shop I'd highly recommend a visit.

I was told a few years ago that Ardbeg ran out of their popular 10 year old and were using the 15 year old as 'makeweight' that year.
Folk don't always know that a 10 year old has to be a minimum of 10 years aged, there is no maximum.

Some of the stuff that ends up in supermarket own brands is pretty decent, just watch that it states 'single malt' and has an age statement on the bottle.

Royal Lochnagar (Standard) 12yo £35.25 standard price, but available cheaper with some searching!

A bit special, but nothing that would 'upset' a Grouse drinker, and 'reasonably priced'.

The Highland Park suggestion by BiM is along the similar lines!

For those of you that know about these things, is this stuff any good? It's been sat in the cupboard for at least 18 years.

Decent whisky worth about £150.

For those not in the know whisky is not like wine.
A 1890 12 year old whisky is still a 12 year old whisky [which is probably very rare]
A 50 year old whisky bottled in 1960 would have been available for sale for the last 6 years.

Silly old fool..last line should have read distilled in 1960. Mind you it could still have been bottled but that would be plain daft.

I'm another with an uneducated view of whisky. First started to like the stuff on a (ahem) "business development" evening at the whisky society. My colleague took it as a personal insult that I wasn't a whisky drinker and insisted I try a few others based on the ones I liked at the tasting. Very good night that, incidentally, with a meal and an expert providing a tasting for us.

At first, though, I tended to favour the whiskey - Jameson's and Bushmills - until a publican in Portree informed me that "yer not in Ireland any more"! A tactful switch to Talisker and I've never looked back.

I'd also recommend a distillery tour - I've done Talisker and Lagavulin - very interesting and a good way to escape the rain on a highland holiday!

Strangely enough I also (vaguely) recall a night in the Grill sampling some of their wares.....

I tend to prefer the peaty ones, quite enjoy trying different ones when the mood strikes but Talisker remains my favourite.
