Making room in the bag?

Was in AG the other day and the fitter in there was chatting about how it is better to have a 5 wood instead of a 3 wood - seems it is more common now for people to carry a 5 (although he did admit that it does really depend on how someone hits their driver as to whether they also have a 3 wood)

I was a member a Bowood (Wilts one) for over 10 years... plenty of room off most tees, par 5s nearly 600 yards... no chance of me getting there in 2.... so out came the 3 wood in favour of an extra wedge.

Moved to Newport, some tight drives and reachable par 5s... back came the 3 wood...

The extra loft on the 5 wood is often very helpful to the likes of me too!

I don't have any woods in my bag and don't need them round my place..... in fact I rarely hit my hybrid any more. 4 and 5 irons are plenty. I do have 4 wedges though. Love a wedge.

To the OP do you not think you are over analyzing and relying on equipment far too much? If I've read this thread right you have been getting lessons from 2 pro's over 4 years and are still off a top h/c - it sounds like its all in your head to me, just switch off when playing, don't think about anything and just enjoy your game - you'd be surprised at your scores

I kinda agree with this sentiment. Each to their own. I'm a half decent long iron player so quite happy to have 2, 3 and 4 irons in my bag and I play a lot of links golf so the lower ball flight is ideal. Also your bag set up is dependant on how far you hit the ball, type of course you play, length of the holes, wind conditions etc.....so many variables.

To the OP......find out what works for you on the courses you play and go with that, not with what other people suggest

without bad mouthing a friend of mine my old pro basically taught me nothing for 3 years until I moved .. changed pros and have within a year gone from 28 to 23 (according to mygolfclubonline) even broke 90 two weeks ago.

unfortunatly my new guy has moved abroad to coach. Shame we worked well together. I'm gonna trail a new pro this winter along with new irons and hopefully for 1st event of next season I'll be on top of my game. In my society I'm still off 28 as my scores haven't been as good as out of those days. So the handicap person hasn't cut me yet. if I play like I have been last few rounds I'll be off 20 in no time. 43 points then 40 points (worked out off 28 as that's what matters on the society days) however off 23 would be 38 and 35 points which would be really good

I swim against the tide here, but I don't always think that handicap figures are necessarily the only barometer of progress. I've had a rough old season, very stop/start and plagued with an illness early on that has still left a mark. That said, I feel I am still moving forward. My short game is improving thanks to the linear method. I am also having lessons and feel that in terms of my swing and ball striking I'm miles further forward than at the start of the year.

I'm not doing it on the course often enough, partly because I've not played as much as I like and partially because I can't stop throwing two car crashes in that blight the card. I'm in a happy place with where my golf is. I intend to enjoy the winter golf without any handicap and scoring aspirations, work with the pro I use to refine what I have (it'll never be text book or picture perfect) and see where I am in February/March next year and hopefully fully fit again I can get my handicap back to 12 and then kick on lower.

Keep doing it, and keep ploughing your own furrow and do it your way. As long as you enjoy it, feel like you're going forward and think you've the right sticks in the bag then what's not to like?

I had a stop start year myself, I started on a high 34 points. 3rd Place in the first event and then work got well and truly in the way.. a year of solid training for a new roll which was so intense I couldn't really give up time to go practice as much as I wanted and hardly played compared to what I wanted to do.. My scores suffered in cons. the only times my scored improved (event wise) was when I went away on their 4 night trip and scored 31, 29 , 34 on the first 3 days (not bad considering the week before I had just started suffering from plantar fasciitis) then the last day I hit 24 had a bad day.. foot playing up and just couldnt find the swing the rest of the week had given me.. prob got a bit tired aswell after 4 rounds in 4 days considering I was used to 1 round a month (down from 3 a month)

Hopefully next season the scores will go up and the handicap will drop down

Defiantly wont be tinkering with my driver again.. I changed its settings from the most forgiving to pure draw.. started off ok on the course.. 211 yards straight.. then was really struggling with it.. hit every fairway but was VERY short.. looks like was going miles then would drop dead.. put it back to forgiving down the range and now its going like it used to..

gonna throw away the tinker tool!

Spare room in the bag is something I don't struggle with to be honest, I have 5-9 irons, PW/50/56/60 degree wedges, 18* hybrid, 15* 3-wood and the obligatory putter so have 2 spare seats most of the time...

I played in a three clubs and a putter competition last week. I didn't score much worse than normal and my bag was amazingly light to carry. Who needs 14 clubs? My choice of clubs was 5-wood, 7-iron and gap wedge, plus of course my putter. :)

If I was pushed into this kind of match I would also pick those 3 clubs (plus the putter) 5 wood is the best club in the bag for me and Gap wedge is my favourite wedge. id be torn between a 7 and a 8 but 7 might edge it for distance.. but I do use an 8 a lot.. I use it on the edge of greens a lot

Taken the plunge and booked 4 lessons with another pro down my range. He had been recommended to me out of the 3 down their by my former pro. Was told he would be best to advance my game. I had been putting off booking lessons because my game has improved and I dont like changing pros! this is forced on me..

However the new guy text me other day and when he suggested 4 lessons for the price of 3 spreading the lessons over 4 months (nov-feb) to get me ready for the new season I thought that to go with the new clubs aswell is probably the best decision.

That and when the lessons run out I can either not have anymore for a while or use some of my bday cash (as thats march) to pay for more lol

lets hope he keeps this progress going well

Good luck with it. Word of mouth recommendation is a great way of finding a good pro and is something I have always used when looking to change.

Yeah my range has 4 pros well had. My guy was a chance change he saw me hitting down range and tweeked my swing I saw instant results and we just went from there. Had a free swing analysis to use down there as part of my membership so I picked him as he had approached me. We ended up good friends with him attending my wedding in the summer. When he was about to leave for his new job aboard I asked him which of the 3 others would suit me best. Normally he wouldn't pick between because professionally their all great of course but as a mate he knows what I'm like with new people and he said he thinks this guy will really push me on.

so if it doesn't work I have someone to blame lol

Decision made for tomorrows round (first round in my second society im playing in) only taking 13 clubs.. 3 hybrid and 5 iron ditched.

Been having so much success with my 3 hybrid recently I have stopped using driver and woods.

my hybrid goes 190 to 210 and I can hit any GIR with it apart from the 440 par 4, but that is the hardest hole.

golf is so much less stressful when you can play from the fairway and are not fighting random driver/wood banana slices
