Making room in the bag?

I've been watching this thread with a mixture of amusement and confusion.

On the basis of what you have posted, if you got down in an average of 3 shots from 100yds you would be off 18 easily; slam dunk.

Suggest you start with this as an objective before bringing it down to a 2 shot target!

another mental issue.. unrealistic targets lol

the 3 wood goes.

Chances are you hit the 5 wood just about the same distance and it's easier to use from the fairway.

I only have 13 clubs in my bag. I could do with something that was about 16/17 degrees I suppose if you just look at the gaps. However, in a practical sense, it is not required as the 3 wood is the club for everything long and the next club down goes about 220 yards. I am not accurate or good enough to need something between the two.

If someone at Ping reads this and wants to give me a 17 degree i25 hybrid with a stiff shaft though, I do have the space. :)

If I was to drop a club, it would not be a 3 wood. No way. Essential for all golfers in my view.

After my last range trip would be a 5 iron dropped personally. The 4 hybrid goes as far but better flight and easier to hit. Not as confident with with the 5 iron.

I went out today.. a Par 67 course near myself to play my first round with my new irons and have some indication what clubs to ditch

results would be ditch the 5 Iron and 3 Hybrid.. I actually used the 3 wood off the deck and was quite useful. 5 wood is too useful to every get out the bag.. was my go to club today.. had a 130 yard par 3.. normally id take an 8 iron but the wind was so bad I took the 5 wood and placed it on the centre of the green (island green surrounded by a lake)

walked off with my personal best score.. 88 so 21 over par with 32 putts and 43 points (if playing off my society 28 handicap.. 41 points off my handicap I worked out online)

Some course management was best today.. did a few cracking shots with the lob wedge out the rough (its earned its place in the bag) but 2 of my best scoring holes I took my 8 iron one I bumped into within 1 foot and another kept low under a tree from 50 yards half swing tracked the pin to within 1 inch lol

feel very good following

specially because for the most I thought I played rather poor!

Ive entered the card into my online handicap tracker apparently puts me off 23.4 now.. however golfshot with its auto working out says 28 still?

Curious why you think a 3 Wood is essential to all golfers?

I carry a Driver and a really strongly lofted 5 Wood at 17 degrees it is really a 4 Wood and do not feel I miss out on a three wood at all. If I were to sacrifice a club it would be the 4 Wood as the 3H only comes up 15 yards short and how many greens I am going to hit from 225-230 anyway? I cannot see it making a difference scoring wise.

When I was having lessons before my pro left we were talking about 3 woods and he said if I didnt already have one he wouldn't recommend me getting one. a 5 wood is much more useful and 3 woods arent all they are cracked up to be in his opinion.. probably helps he could smash his 200 plus yards every time

Most pros want this too. Most don't have it either. Be careful of setting your goals too high.

good point lol, managed it a few times today . rolled to within 1 foot and tap in putt felt good

but your right most of the time was on the green then 2 putt

Because it is the club that goes the furthest from a good lie on the fairway and all golfers need this.

Can see both ponys of the argument here my old course was very short and I would never need a 3 wood however now I'm on a longer course some of the par 4s and the par 5 defo require a 3 wood

How about the second shot into a long par 4 or a long par 3 against the wind ?
A normal 5 wood will just balloon and a 4 iron wont get near it.

Not if they can't hit well it isn't

Is that not something that can be practiced and improved ?

Of course it can, but today there is plenty of options you can have in your bag that dropping a 3w is not the end of the world. As usual there are a few things that affect this, length of holes / course how often you will actually need the club. If you are Mid - High cappers practicing the short game should gain more than getting great with a 3w from the deck just based on the law of averages

I dropped my 3 wood earlier in the year as I was getting the same distance from my 2 hybrid and was hitting the hybrid more consistently. Put the three wood back in the bag recently (actually I was in a rush and thought I had put the 3 hybrid in!). Hit it really well and its now going better than the 2 hybrid so its back to stay for the time being.

The more and more I practice down the range the more it looks between the 3 hybrid and the 5 Iron.. in fact id even go down to 13 clubs again and ditch the both of them.. if anything id just keep the 3H in the bag incase I decide to use it.. cant think of many situations id be like man I wish I had a 5 iron right about now

Good that you love them.

It is easy - take if from someone who knows. I could do it when I was aged 11 off 22 handicap in 1982 with a Bobby Locke persimmon 3 wood that my grandad gave me.

Still, you know best eh?

but back in the day the loft on that 3 wood is probably a modern day 5 wood
