Making room in the bag?

Work back from the greens were you play and see how many holes you'd need your 3 wood for a second shot into the green and then see what effect not carrying the 3 wood would make to you.

I'd ditch the 5H. How much difference is there between that and the 5 iron

Dont have a 5h I have a 5 wood, I like my new 5 8
iron aswell it's won its place lol

good shout paul about when do I use a 3 wood off the deck maybe about twice this year

You typed 5h, I take it you mean 4h?, Drop the 3 wood, at your level unless your hitting it off the tee it's just going to get you into trouble

Splitting hairs but I cant find where I typed 5 hybrid, 5 Iron, 3 and 4 hybrid was my opening post anyways yeah 3 wood I used to use off the tee so it was the first club in the bag.. but this season i purchased a new driver and adapted to it now I use that always

have used the 3 wood off the tee about 4 times this year all on the same hole on a long par 3 that I played 4 days in a row

I would bet your 3 hybrid and 5 wood are only yards apart. Unless your off very low single figures not going to make a scrap off difference which you drop.

Here

to keep inside the 14 club (outdated) rule on clubs in the bag I am currently facing a dilemma of what club to ditch for now ..

I play the following.. Driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, 3 hybrid, 5 hybrid, 5 - PW, 50 , 54 , 58 degree.. and obviously a putter.

Ultimately though for me it's always about the bottom end and the wedges and I'd simply look to drop a hybrid (prob the 4H).

Applogises, in original I stated the correct way round

i considered a 5 hybrid few months ago but can now hit my 5 iron again

No need for apologies and it's an interesting conundrum. Having considered it, the 3H and 5W would seem the closest in terms of distance and I can see the merit in dropping either. I guess it might depend where you are playing and the style of holes as to which you'd prefer to keep

Is there any iron youve just not got on with? One you're slow to take out of the bag? Like a 6 or 9 iron? Lots of us have one iron we never feel quite as confident with, we will go easy with one more or launch one less rather than hit it. You have one of those? Drop that. If not, I agree with the above - what does the 4h give you that the 3h doesn't?

It was the 5 iron but it won me over today. Was the 3 hybrid and 5 iron. Hit them very well today. 4 hybrid I can get out the rough with can't with hybrid

6 and 9 I'm very comfortable with. In fact 6 was my go to iron for many years

homer your right about situations 3 hybrid on fairway but if I'm in a fairway bunker I can hover a 5 wood above the sand and hit it straight out no issue everytime

I own both and have had both in the bags at different times. 5 wood is still a decent club from semi rough.

A clean strike with both goes pretty much the same distance.

Both can be played on long par 4s and off the tee.

Absolutely no need for both in the bag at the same time.

i disagree personally as I hit my 5 wood out of the bunkers I don't with my hybrid also there is about 20 yards between them, but that's likely to change with my swing

If you are regularly hitting 5 woods from bunkers then you need to stop going in them ;)

That should be a pretty rare shot and high risk.

It really shouldn't be the reason for keeping a club in the bag over another .

Do what you feel is best.

read an article in today's golfer it's actually not that high risk a shot. Something I've always been able to do with the 5 wood. If my drive is caught by a bunker I can float it 160-170 with the 5 wood out

But how often does that happen in a round, it's like you are finding the odd excuse to keep every club in there. In an ideal world it would be great to have enough clubs to cover every eventuality even if it's just for 1 or 2 shots per round, we could all bring 20 clubs and use half of them once or twice a round but golf doesn't work like that.

Any club similar in distance to another that hardly gets used in a round is the one or ones to lose. It doesn't matter in the scheme of things what that club is.

I dropped a 3w for the same reason, never really used it and when I did using the 5w instead wasn't really a problem but I could always have had a reason to keep it in but a club needed to go and it was that one.

After a 10 year break I am playing off 24, used to be a 12 and I can certainly say having 5 wedges or 16 clubs in my bag won't help me get back to a 12 handicap, consistency around the clubs and the ability to make the right choices and play the right shots will be more important than lofting a 5w out of a bunker or having 5 wedges to choose from at 70 yards when I can duff my shots with any and all of them on any given hole (thats why I am a 24 not because I need 16 clubs)..

Id say once every other round i play a 5 wood out a bunker however I also would say the 5 wood is always my second hit on a par 5

only need one club to drop and its looking more like a 3 wood
