Mail On Sunday Club Classic

Played our 2nd round game today away at a course that 3/5 of us had never seen before, and managed to win 3.5-1.5

Chuffed is an understatement!

Only 9 more rounds to go! :)
nice one Gary. What course was it that you played?

The draws are regionalised till much later aren't they?

We played today but sadly lost 4-1 despite all the games going to the 17th or 18th. I lost my match 2&1 to an 18year old girl who hit the ball a country mile, if she could have putted better I would have been thrashed.
I felt a little better afterwards when I found out she was at college studying golf.

Market Harborough. Nice enough course but the greens on the front 9 had been cored. Not the little 'hardly noticeable' ones, but the big 1/4" diameter every 2" ones. Made putting a bit of a lottery but I had the least bad luck of the 2 of us.

I don't know much about how the draw is done. I'd assume they keep it as local as possible for as long as possible, but that's only a guess.
Evesdad's club played a course from Warks and there's still plenty of Leics courses in the draw so I dunno.

Well it does have the headquarters of England Golf (or EGU as you insist on still calling it) and England Golf runs amateur golf in England. So why can't it be called the home of English Golf?

Oops. Just discovered this reply.

Home of England Golf would be fine, but Home of English Golf has other connotations - and equally doesn't refer to the particular organisation that is based there! I'll update my reference, though EGU is apparently still a real entity.

We won our second round match last weekend. Score was 2.5/2.5 so the fifth player (me) had to play sudden death. I had halved my match, giving 11 shots, and was a bit concerned as I had to give a shot on each of the first three play off holes (I lost all three of those in the actual match!). Fortunately, for me, my opponent hit one of the few bad shots she played all day and ended up with a double bogey...

Been drawn at home for the next one. Happy days!

One thing that's surprised me is the handicaps of the players chosen to represent their clubs. I'd have expected the teams to be full of 9-12 hc's that can obviously play and are capable of going low, but so far they've mostly been mid to high single figures.

The team we have is a 3,4,4,5,5 I would have thought mid handicappers as well. Seems to work though as our lot got to the last 16 last year.

The club I was at last year got beat in the final in Spain and the highest handicap was 2, I think some clubs take it more serious than others.

Round 3 has been arranged for the day I'm playing Mentmore. :(

Just have to keep my fingers crossed they get through and hopefully I'll play Rd4.

Through to the 5 th round today after an extra hole. Our last guy had to win 16 and 18 to win his match for us to be 2.5 -2.5, then won first extra hole , phew :)

Congrats. Good luck in the next round

We lost our last game 3.5-1.5 and I couldn't make it, so out without losing for me :(
