Luke Shaw most expensive teenager is he all that?

That was my point. I'm not saying Shaw will be as good a player as Rio,just pointing out that you don't only spend big on players who will get you goals.

I didn't say anything about Shaw getting goals. My point was more the fact he's got a big price tag without actually being the proven article at the top level like the CL (yes I know United aren't in it this season). I think he's the potential to be as solid as Ferdinand and arguably one of the best defenders we've seen but not sure he's worth the fee yet

I brought Rio Ferdinand up because of the post regarding Paul Scholes comment.

Opinion from someone who has watched him pretty much all the way through. Going forward he's excellent. Bombs down the wing, scares the bejeezus out of the right back, puts a decent cross in and not afraid to cut in and have a go. Downsides at the moment, shooting is poor, defensively still quite naive at times and can get caught out of position particularly after a run forward. He's very good, but he's no Gareth Bale. £33m for him is fantastic business for Saints.

He's 18, so you are talking about a player that has got 15 years in him at the top level. If he turns out to be as good as his potential then it is like buying 2 LBs. Because if you buy a more established one in his mid 20s you have only got to replace him again in 6/7 years time, where shaw does not require that. That is why you pay such a premium for players that
young.
I am sure the same was said about Cleverly,Smalling,Jones, the dutch guy at left back etc etc...Man Utd seem desperate

I watched Smalling a lot at Fulham and wasn't convinced he was all that and he hasn't really come on since. I think the sale of Shaw is fantastic business for Southampton who will get two if not three good players with that cash. Add in the funds from Lallana and they can buy some replacements and still be fine next season.

Not sure we will need to replace Shaw. Nathaniel Clyne is perfectly comfortable at lb, and we have a young lad coming through, Matt targett, who is very highly rated, even more so than Shaw by some of our coaches

Strength in depth though. If you can get a few players coming through again and buy good players with the funds then you'll have great depth which is crucial these days. Part of Fulham's problems last year (apart from playing crap) was we didn't have enough quality cover throughout and so injuries made a weak side even worse

Boruc,
clyne,
fonte,
?????,
chambers,
davis,
wanyama,
cork,
Ramirez,
j ray,
prowse.

Id id settle for that starting line up over many we've had in the past.

Personally i I think shaw is worth every penny. But is defo an lb. Bale was always gonna move up the pitch.

Not quote the opinion I was hoping for an young evra then??!!

£28m Fellaini.
£38m Mata.
£29m Herrera.
£34m Shaw.

£129m in less than a year

United fans; Tell us again how City are buying the league...

As Pin said, they have spent a huge amount in the last 12 months and some of the fees paid do seem a bit crazy. Herrera, 24 and I do not think he has been capped at senior level, has he? So £29m looks like a lot to pay. I can see why they have had to pay that for Shaw, but again looks like a ridiculous amount. Fellaini, £28m..........., say no more. Mata, absolute class and will shine under someone who knows what he is doing.

Typical EPL - mad money for a player learning the game and pretty much unproven. Potential yes, ability yes. Worth £30m? - well 'worth' is a curious beast in the hyperbolic world that is the EPL - the 'best' league in the world - yeh right.

Can't remember them saying that about them 4 players, they aren't in the same league as Shaw. Jones could be a decent defender, Smalling not so sure and Cleverley I don't think wil be at Utd for long, seems to have faded pretty quickly.
